Copa América Daily: Barça Warriors go to war

Plus: Argentina reach quarterfinals

Six teams qualified, two left, one more night of the 2019 Copa America group stage to go. This hasn’t been the most exciting tournament ever, but the decisive third round of matches was pretty good, at least in Groups A and B. Now Group C comes to a close, and two Barcelona warriors will to war for top spot in the group.

Arturo Vidal and Luis Suárez will start for Chile and Uruguay as they meet at the Maracanã, and to avoid a very tough quarterfinal matchup with Colombia they’ll have to finish first. With just four points from two matches La Celeste must win the game, while six-point Chile can play a more pragmatic match since a draw is enough for them.

On the balance of play Uruguay have been the better team despite the draw with Japan in the second game, and it’s safe to say they’re favorites to win this one. Suárez has looked sharp and his chemistry with Edinson Cavani is now at a near telepathic level. The Chile backline is the weakest part of their team, so if the two strikers are at their best they could have joy in front of goal.

But getting away from Chile’s midfield led by Vidal is the tough part. King Arturo has been running around like a madman while maintaing poise and making big plays in the attack, and it’s incredible how Eduardo Vargas and Alexis Sánchez turn into world-class players with the national team and could be a terror to the Uruguay defense on Monday night.

This is going to be so much fun.

*******

Quick shoutout to Lionel Messi and Argentina who are through to the Last Eight thanks to a good win against Qatar. They still need a lot of improvement ahead of the knockouts, but avoiding their biggest rivals and facing a solid yet beatable Venezuela side on Friday gives them hope of becoming a strong enough team for a potential semifinal with Brazil.

And if we get that semifinal... OH. DEAR.
