Report: Barcelona, Valencia discussing trade for German defender

Barcelona is openly looking for a defender next season, and they could be finding their man in La Liga.

According to reports in Spain, the Catalan giants have not given up on their interest in Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi, who has been heavily linked with a move away from his current club. Mustafi has offers from the Premier League and the Bundesliga, and he is not expected to stay with The Bats next season.

Despite the heavy competition for the player, Barça could have an advantage: over the last few days, reports have surfaced about a potential move from Valencia for backup defender Marc Bartra, who is set to leave the Catalan giants after spending another season on the bench, with very few opportunities. Valencia see Bartra as a good, promising center-back, and they could be looking at the Spanish international as Mustafi's replacement if the German is to leave.

That is why, according to reports from Catalan radio, the Blaugrana would be open to discussing a trade, in which Mustafi would arrive at Camp Nou in exchange for Bartra and an addition fee, since the German is a very expensive player. A deal worth €30 million plus Bartra is believed to be enough to convince Valencia to sell, and if no better offers come from the other leagues, Mustafi would be a Barça player next season.

However, it is important to note the club's main targets remain Paris Saint-Germain's Brazilian prospect Marquinhos, along with Athletic Bilbao star Aymeric Laporte. The Blaugranes will continue to pursue the two players all summer, but if they fail to make those deals happen, then Mustafi would be the immediate next choice.
