Barcelona are your La Liga champions after a comprehensive, dominating 3-0 win over Granada on Saturday afternoon, which clinched the Spanish league title in the final game of the season for the Catalan giants. As we continue to celebrate another championship, here's a few takeaways from Saturday's party.
1. Luis Suárez was the best player in La Liga
It is really hard to think about someone else other than Lionel Messi, but even Leo would admit he was not the best player in Spain this season, especially since he missed two months of football earlier in the campaign. Nobody in the whole league came close to the level displayed by Luis Suárez. Statistically, it's not even a contest, but the performances themselves were incredible. The Uruguayan simply destroyed the league, and his 14 goals in the final five games pretty much won Barça the championship. He finished with 40 goals in 35 appearances, an astonishing mark only Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo should be able to reach, and El Pistolero will deservedly finish the season as the undisputed king of La Liga.
2. Barça own Spain
After an eighth league title in the last twelve years, there is no discussion anymore. No other team in Spain has been as successful or dominant as Barcelona. Since Joan Laporta took over 13 years ago, a new style of football was introduced, an unbelievable group of superstars came through the academy, and the club began to take over the country. Over a decade of spectacular football and results clearly show this is the biggest team in Spain today. No contest.
3. La Liga might not be enough
I hate to be buzzkill, but let's take a step back from celebrating the league and look at the bigger picture. Are we really satisfied if we only win one title after getting a Treble? The European frustration is in the past, and since nobody has won back-to-back Champions League trophies, it's fine to be knocked out eventually. But the Copa del Rey would be a fantastic achievement to go along with the league, and since Sevilla will play a Europa League Final just four days prior to the Spanish Cup decider, Barça are favorites. If we don't win at Calderón, should we still celebrate this season, or will we be a little disappointed? Just to avoid any depression, let's just win the Cup too.
