Barcelona are the Copa del Rey champions for the second straight season after an unforgettable 2-0 overtime victory over Sevilla on Sunday. As we continue to celebrate, here's a few takeaways from a spectacular night in Madrid.
1. Gerard Piqué had the match of his life
Piqué has had some incredible performances throughout his career, and he's the best center-back in football for a reason. But his outing in the Cup Final was certainly his greatest game so far. It was 120 minutes of amazing. He destroyed the damned ball with his head, and he was on top of absolutely every aerial duel he was involved in. If the Sevilla players tried to run past him, he would stop the play with a perfect tackle on the ground. His level of play in the last six games (six clean sheets) has been fantastic, and he capped off another world-class season with a simply otherworldly game.
P.S. Kudos to Jérémy Mathieu. What he did under the pressure of replacing Mascherano was spectacular in its own right.
P.S. 2: The full-backs were sensational. Dani Alves and Jordi Alba have defense as their weak point, but they played a perfect defensive game against Sevilla's dangerous wing players. Plus, Alba scored the first goal with an incredible overlapping run. Good job, guys.
P.S. 3: Sergio Busquets was basically the third center-back all night, and he was also incredible. He didn't miss one tackle, and his passes were always on point. Love you, Busi.
2. Andrés Iniesta should play forever
I would sit here and praise Don Andrés, but the truth is this was just another day in the office for Iniesta. There is one play in particular I would like to highlight: at the end of overtime, he dribbled himself to the wrong side and ended up alone with five Sevilla players in front surrounding him. I knew this wasn't a problem. Iniesta just spinned a couple of times, kept the ball close to him and got out of there, going into acres of space and winning Barça a few more vital seconds.
Iniesta should play in a tuxedo. That's how elegant he is.
3. Luis Enrique is fantastic
It has been two years of Lucho. His first six months were rough, but he has been spectacular ever since. If you don't think the character showed by the players on Sunday has something to do with the fighting spirit Enrique has instilled into this group, you know nothing about football.
