UEFA Champions League: APOEL Nicosia 0-4 FC Barcelona: Player Ratings

A detailed, player-by-player breakdown of Barcelona's confidence boosting Champions League victory over APOEL.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen

Bostjan says: 8.0

Even though goalkeepers generally don’t mind games when the action is almost exclusively on the other side of the pitch, games like that are always a danger for the goalie to "fall asleep". That didn’t happen with ter Stegen who earned another clean sheet, making only one save, but it was a brilliant one-handed stop just over the one hour mark. The young German again impressed with his passing, completing each of his 21 passes, even though nine of them were long passes

Dani Alves

Fouls: 3

Bostjan says: 6.5

As so many times this season Alves didn’t do a whole lot on the pitch, but somehow ended the game with an assist. Truth be told, it was a fantastic assist off of which Messi scored his second of the night, but Messi was just about the only player Alves was on the same page with. With APOEL playing a very defensive game, Alves spent a lot of time in the attacking zone, but apart from the aforementioned assist he had little to none positive effect whatsoever. Defensively he also wasn’t much involved, but he really didn’t need to be.

Marc Bartra
7.8

Touches: 97

Passes: 87

Pass Accuracy: 94 %

Tackles: 3

Aerial Duels Won: 1

Bostjan says: 8.0

This had to have been one of the easiest games Bartra has not only been involved in, but will ever feature in in the Champions League. The youngster was hardly ever tested by APOEL’s forwards, but when he was, he remained calm and was there to make the necessary play. He maintained his concentration throughout the game, but one would have trouble noticing if he lost it at any point of the game. We’ve become used to Bartra going on at least one run across the pitch, however, this time he played as a "deep safety", allowing Pique to play higher up the pitch.

Gerard Pique7.6

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 100

Passes: 96

Pass Accuracy: 94%

Tackles: 0

Interceptions: 0

Clearances: 1

Aerial Duels Won: 4

Fouls: 0

Bostjan says: 7.5

Similarly to Bartra, Pique too was barely tested, maybe he was tested even less than his younger teammate, but Pique as well had a good game. He was strong in the air game, leading the team in aerial duels won, and was generally very involved in the game, making the fourth most touches off the ball. Toward the end of the game, with the game firmly in hand, Pique lost position on a couple of plays, but that did not hurt Barcelona.

Jordi Alba
7.6

Minutes played: 61

Touches: 99

Passes: 89

Pass Accuracy: 92%

Shots/Shots on Target: 1/0

Tackles: 1

Interceptions: 3

Clearances: 0

Aerial Duels Won : 2

Key passes: 4

Bostjan says: 8.0

Alba has become a real offensive catalyst for Barcelona over the last few games and this one was no different. Playing basically as a left midfielder he rarely tracked back – he rarely needed to – Alba spend most of the time in APOEL’s third. And more importantly, he was a constant threat, finishing the game with the second most key passes, also thwarting a great scoring chance to open the scoring early in the game. Alba was also credited with an assist on Suarez’s first goal as a Barcelona player.

Javier Mascherano
8.2

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 127

Passes: 117

Pass Accuracy: 94 %

Tackles: 3

Interceptions: 4

Shots/Shots on Target: 0/0

Clearances: 1

Aerial Duels Won: 3

Turnovers: 0

Key passes: 0

Sam says: 7.5

Playing in a position many fans had been asking for for a while, Mascherano put in a solid performance which helped Barça to keep a clean sheet. His good tackling helped his team to keep control of the midfield which meant the more creative players could create more chances. His passing was also excellent, making over 100 passes with an accuracy of 94%.

Rafinha
6.6

Minutes played: 70

Touches: 67

Passes: 57

Pass Accuracy: 9 5%

Shots/Shots on Target: 2/0

Turnovers: 3

Key Passes: 1

Successful Dribbles : 3

Tackles: 1

Sam says: 6.5

Not the best night for the 21 year old making two petty fouls that made him see red, perhaps a sign of his youth. He did however put in an okay performance before he left the field, with his highlight being his assist for Messi’s first goal. He maintained a good pass success rate too but he didn’t make the best of his chance in the first team.

Ivan Rakitić
7.5

Minutes played: 61

Touches: 61

Passes: 50

Pass Accuracy: 84%

Shots/Shots on Target: 2/0

Fouls Won: 1

Tackles: 1

Turnovers: 3

Key Passes: 0

Successful Dribbles : 0

Sam says: 6.5

Not one of the Croatians finest performances in a Barcelona shirt. First of all his passing was slightly loose, especially for a midfielder in this team, with a success rate of 84%. He also struggled to have any real attacking threat in the game and failed to create any clear cut chances. He also didn’t put in his usual defensive shift either making just the one tackle all game.

Luis Suarez
8.6

Minutes played: 76

Touches: 61

Passes: 39

Pass Accuracy: 69%

Shots/Shots on Target: 6/3

Turnovers: 4

Successful Dribbles: 3

Key Passes: 0

Fouls Won: 2

Tackles: 2

Ahmed says: 8.5

Arguably his best display in a Blaugrana shirt. His first goal for Barcelona was outstanding. The way he turned Guilherme first time for the goal was quite something, an absolute delight that’s to be re-watched many times over. The way he then coolly guided the finish past the goalkeeper and into the bottom corner was something else. Suarez drew Guilherme’s first yellow card. He was everywhere and reminded me a bit of Thierry Henry and Samuel Eto’o when at Barca. Should have scored when put through by Messi but sliced the shot horribly wide. Suarez had some more good chances to score. Overall though, a great (and very promising!) performance. Replaced by Busquets soon after Rafinha’s dismissal.

Lionel Messi
9.7

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 127

Passes: 100

Pass Accuracy: 89%

Shots/Shots on Target: 5/4

Fouls Won: 3

Successful Dribbles: 7

Key Passes: 8

Turnovers: 4

Tackles: 1

Ahmed says: 10.0

I’m not quite sure what to write anymore. We are truly running out of superlatives to describe someone who is nothing less than a living legend. Messi scored a rare right-footed (first ever in the UCL by a left-footed player) hat-trick to comfortably become the Champions League’s all-time leading scorer in a flawless performance, not to mention all the other records he broke on Tuesday evening. I’ll end with some newspaper quotes. "Back-to-back records and back-to-back hat-tricks!" "Insurmountable." "Extraterrestrial Messi." Two records and six goals in three days." "Messi keeps breaking records." "Another record falls."

Pedro
6.7

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 67

Passes: 51

Pass Accuracy: 92 %

Shots/Shots on Target: 2/0

Fouls Won: 1

Key Passes: 2

Successful Dribbles: 2

Turnovers: 1

Ahmed says: 7.0

Overshadowed by both Messi and Suarez but put in a very respectable performance. Indeed, one of his better performances this season. He worked hard all match and drew Guilherme’s sending off. It was his pin-point cross (from Mascherano’s otherworldly pass) which led to Messi’s third of the game. Had a very good chance to score but hit the shot agonisingly wide of the right-hand post. An impressive and much improved performance from Pedro.

Xavi
7.8

Minutes played: 29

Touches: 42

Passes: 38

Pass Accuracy: 92 %

Successful Dribbles : 2

Key Passes : 1

Arron says: 7.0

What's worse than trailing FC Barcelona by three goals? There aren't many things, but seeing Xavi warming up in preparation to come on is probably one of them. Xavi entered the match before Rafinha's sending off and generally bossed the midfield as he usually does, making one good pass in his half an hour on the field.

Adriano Correia
6.5

Minutes played: 29

Touches: 20

Passes: 20

Pass Accuracy: 100 %

Fouls : 0

Arron says: 7.0

Replacing Jordi Alba to allow the Catalan a chance to rest ahead of his return to the Mestalla at the weekend, Adriano didn't put a foot wrong in his half an hour on the field, completing 100% of his passes and assisting the rest of the defense as we closed out another clean sheet.

Sergio Busquets
6.9

Minutes played: 14

Touches: 20

Passes: 18

Pass Accuracy: 100 %

Tackles : 1

Arron says: N/A

With Rafinha off, Lucho made the conservative call to bring Sergio Busquets into the match, and Busi did exactly what we expected -- helped shore up an already dominant midfield. Not enough to warrant a full rating though.

The Team8.9

Passes: 924

Pass Accuracy: 92 %

Shots/Shots on Target: 21 /7

Tackles: 16

Aerial Battles Won: 67 %

Fouls Won/Committed: 16/5

Arron says: 9.5

Excellent. Brilliant. Dominant. Whatever superlative comes to mind is probably appropriate for this display; Barcelona controlled the game from start to finish, encountering little in the way of resistance from a surprisingly naive APOEL outfit.

Luis Enrique
8.3

Arron says: 9.0

The selection was perfect; Luis Suarez thrived without Neymar to take Lionel Messi's attention, and that partnership showed signs of promise as a result. The midfield did very well without Xavi or Iniesta and the defense put in another solid display. A decent night all around.

I'm not even going to try to explain his brilliance. It would do him justice.
