FC Barcelona Injury Report: Thomas Vermaelen Set for Surgery, Likely to Miss Remainder of Season

Some worrying reports from Barcelona claim that Thomas Vermaelen will go under the knife, which will likely cause him to miss the remainder of his first season with Barça.

He's the only Barcelona player in the squad that hasn't played a single second with the first-team, in pre-season or regular season. And he will have to wait a lot more to play with the first team.

According to reports coming from Catalunya, Thomas Vermaelen, one of the two center-backs signed by the team in the offseason, is set to go under the knife for a surgical repair of the groin injury he suffered more than five months ago at a World Cup group stage match with the Belgium national team.

Since arriving at Barcelona's facilities, Vermaelen has dealt with the issue, that has come and gone for months now. He received the medical green light two different times, only to complain of pain in the same region on the very next training session, sources say. After months of back-and-fourth, the medical staff decided to finally schedule him for surgery, which will happen possibly next week. Barça have already called Thomas' personal doctor to inform him of their decision and decide the date of the operation.

The initial diagnosis set a timetable of five months, if the surgery and the rehab go according to plan, sources say. That period of time will coincide with the end of the season, which means that Vermaelen is likely to miss the remainder of his first campaign as a Blaugrana.

When confirmed, these are sad news. We wish Thomas a very successful recovery. After all, he is still a Barça player.
