A reunion in the cards?

Former FC Barcelona player and coach Pep Guardiola could be on his way back to the Camp Nou. But it could depend on whether he guides his current team, Manchester City, to UEFA Champions League glory.

That’s all according to ESPN Argentina, who say that the manager could be considering a move to Barcelona soon if, and only if, his current club triumphs at the European level.

Guardiola won the Champions League twice with Barcelona but hasn’t won it in stints for Bayern Munich and Manchester City, despite continued domestic success.

The Citizens have advanced to the quarterfinals, where they’ll meet Borussia Dortmund. Should they win, Guardiola’s side will take on either Bayern Munich or Paris Saint-Germain.

“Really, if Manchester City is the winner of this Champions League, Pep Guardiola could return to lead FC Barcelona. He would go to Barcelona. Another reason to convince [Lionel Messi to stay,]” Christian Martin said on ESPN.

Rumors say that Lionel Messi is deciding whether to join PSG or stay at Barça. The election of Joan Laporta reportedly has inched Messi closer to staying tha, when there was simply no chance he would remain.

Now, it remains to be seen whether Laporta will try to convince Guardiola to come back. Laporta was the president who first believed in Guardiola when he was Barcelona B’s coach. Ronald Koeman is the manager right now, and Laporta has given him a vote of confidence to remain in his post - at least for now.

“He would finish his era [at City] after winning the Champions League despite having signed a renewal recently. Although Koeman is doing better, Guardiola and [Mikel] Arteta would be the possible alternatives,” Martin said.

Another who has been linked with a move from City to Barcelona is Sergio Agüero, who is a lifelong friend of Messi’s. The Argentine striker has been said to be considering a free transfer back to La Liga at the end of the season.

“I imagine that ‘Kun’ and Guardiola would be key to convincing Messi,” Martin said.

Guardiola’s current deal with Man City expires in 2023.
