Barcelona implode again and get blown out of the water in Italy.
Well, there's not much you can say that's positive about Barcelona's game against Juventus. Sadly, Juventus were without a doubt the better team on the field, beating us handily and deservedly so. We all understand there's nothing more than we can and should do than root for our team in the best and worst of times. The horrid loss against Juventus is one of the worst times. We are not casual fans that close the book on our lads when they are down, but I wouldn't blame anyone if they can't muster the same excitement and confidence in turning around this scoreline as they did against PSG. I can only say two positive things after watching this game. One, it might be a pyrrhic victory, but most of you have been correct about the state of the quality and ability of the team this season. Two, there is a beauty in sports of being an endless source of hope each new season. As bad as things are now, we only have to wait a short while before having the opportunity of winning it all again.
There are many things that need to be fixed if next season Barcelona plan to compete. The defense is the area with the most urgent need and it is not just a right-back with the skill set that matches the style of play. We need two great center backs. Mathieu doesn't cut it in any way, shape, or form and Mascherano has started to show many deficiencies. I am also not convinced at all that Pique is an elite defender. He might have elite performances every once in a while, but that's once in a very long while. He did nothing worth mentioning in the match against Juventus, and in fact had a couple of plays that were surprisingly terrible. It wasn't a result of terrible overall play from the team, as Umtiti had a good performance. I love Pique's attitude, and he truly loves this team, but he wouldn't be an undisputed starter if I were coach.
Irish Goat's Three Gamboling Goleadores
1st Goleador: Samuel Umtiti
He was the only bright light in what was a bleak day on defense. He excelled as a center back, and kept on rolling when switched to the flank. That's what I would enjoy seeing from the rest of the players: that commitment and drive.
2nd Goleador: Lionel Messi
We didn't score a single goal against Juventus, but one thing is certain: we wouldn't have gotten anywhere close to even sniffing a goal if it weren't for Messi and his vision. Regrettably Buffon had a terrific evening and snuffed those chances out, but at least there was something.
3rd Goleador: Sergi Roberto
All kidding aside, he probably was the third best player on the team, so not just a hall pass thing.
