“If you play a first half like that, with rhythm and intensity, and you tire out your opponent, an opponent that can bring the pressure, and which tries to put you in compromising situations...it gave us a chance in the second half to find more space, we were able to take advantage of a miscue to go ahead on the scoreboard, and the rhythm, I believe, benefited us."

They are there by virtue of their better head-to-head record against co-leaders Real Madrid, who survived a scare to beat Valencia in a game that kicked off four and a half hours earlier. Cristiano Ronaldo headed the all-whites into a first half lead, and had also missed a penalty before a Daniel Parejo free kick on 82 minutes put the sides back level.
