Euro 2016: 14 June 2016; Live Open Thread

Open thread for Euro 2016 matches played on 14 June 2016

Another thrilling day of Euro 2016 is behind is. This time we saw Spain dominate the Czech Republic but only managed to scrape a late 1-0 victory courtesy of a Barcelona connection as Gerard Pique headed the ball home in the 87th minute from an Andres Iniesta cross. Then, the Republic of Ireland came close to breaking the hearts of Sweden fans and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but the match ended with a one-all draw, both goals scored by Ireland. The big game of the day was left for last, and there Italy out-dueled Belgium to the tune of 2-0.

Today, unlike the past three days, only two games will be played as only four teams haven't played their Round 1 matches. All four teams are in Group F and it will start off in Bordeaux where neighbor countries Austria and Hungary will look to start the competition with a win. Austria have only once beaten Hungary once in a final tournament, and that win has a long beard by now - it came in 1934, but an impressive qualifiers campaign makes Austria comfortable favorites in this one.

The second match of the days also has a clear favorite - Portugal. But standing in Cristiano Ronaldo and company's way is arguably the biggest surprise of the Euro qualifiers campaign, Iceland, who beat out, among others, Turkey and Netherlands for second place in their group, behind Czech Republic. The game will mark Iceland's major tournament debut but despite their lack of major tournament history they should not be discounted. Still, Portugal has never lost to Icaland and if the Portuguese have large appetites about this edition of Euro they can't afford to lose their first one now.
