Argentina erect Leo Messi statue in hopes it changes his mind on retirement

To say that Argentina aren't taking Lionel Messi's retirement declaration well would be an understatement. The country and their leaders are doing everything in their power to try and convince the Barcelona star to reconsider his international retirement and come back.

We've already seen Argentina's president, Mauricio Macri, and all-time legend Diego Maradona plead with Messi to forget about his retirement. Now they're pulling out all of the stops.

On Tuesday, the city of Buenos Aires erected a statue of Lionel Messi as a gesture of goodwill to hopefully convince him to play for Argentina once again.

The city's mayor, Horacio Rodriguez Larreta, made no bones about the purpose of the statue. "... I think (it is) a good way to ask Leo to come with us, and to remain together with us and for him to take us by the hand and to win."

He hopes that peer pressure on social media will be enough to win back Messi's heart and get him back with Argentina.

"... Take your picture with the statue of Leo and post it on social media as a way to ask Leo to stick with us," Larreta said.

Who knows exactly what Messi is thinking or if he'll ever play for Argentina again, but gestures like this can only help, I'd think.
