Arsenal FC Manager Arsène Wenger Hints at Thomas Vermaelen Exit

Good sign for Barça?

Thomas Vermaelen is now the favorite to be the newest FC Barcelona signing. And his current coach, Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger, seems to be getting used to the idea of his captain leaving.

At a press conference before the Emirates Cup (a two-day, four-team tournament that happens this weekend at Emirates Stadium, Arsenal's home) Wenger said, reluctantly, that the possibility of Vermaelen leaving the club is a real one, even though he wants the player to stay.

"At the moment Thomas Vermaelen is here. He is injured at the moment with a short-term injury. It [a move] could happen, yes it’s a possibility that he goes. If he goes we have to replace him because he’s an important player in our squad.

"I expect him to stay but he, of course, did not play enough games last year. For me he’s a very important player but I couldn’t guarantee him the games he wanted last year."

For Wenger to say "if he goes", the possibility of Vermaelen actually going has to be real. Right now, Barcelona is the one actual contender, and their €15 million offer attracted Arsenal. Barça's president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, is in England, and joined the team in St. George's Park, for the last day of training. If he will use his time to get a deal done, we don't know.

What we do know is that Vermaelen has a real chance of not being a Gunner anymore. Does that mean he'll be a Blaugrana? We have 30 days to figure it out.
