We're nearly there folks. Less than one week separates FC Barcelona and the start of the 2014-15 La Liga, as in just six days time, the Blaugrana will kick off their campaign against Elche CF at the Camp Nou. However, before Barça can entertain thoughts of that season opener, they have the Joan Gamper Trophy to contend with.
In honour of one of the club's most influential figures, the Gamper Trophy has served as the traditional curtain raiser for the season for longer than the current squad have been alive -- it's part of the club's identity now and always will be. And as far as friendly cups go, the Gamper also has a meaning: it's a chance for the Blaugrana to show off their squad ahead of a new season and it's a chance for the Camp Nou crowd to forget whatever happened the season before and get behind their team all over again.
This year, Mexican champions Club Leon are the side hoping to defeat the Blaugrana and take the title back home with them. However, following the departure of club captain and former Barça legend Rafael Marquez, Leon are not expected to really threaten their hosts. Of course, Marquez will be present at the game as a special guest, but it remains to be seen whether he will start the match.
With that in mind, Luis Enrique has a few decisions of his own to make: will Luis Suarez make his debut? What about Neymar and Lionel Messi?
