The club have made a complete U-turn on the defender’s future
Samuel Umtiti seems to be “definitely” staying at Barcelona despite weeks of speculation claiming that the Frenchman would leave the Camp Nou this summer.
According to multiple reports from Spain, it’s now been decided that Umtiti will continue after a meeting with president Joan Laporta.
Barca had appeared determined to offload Umtiti but the defender has been reluctant to go, while his injury record and high salary have put off potential admirers.
Mundo Deportivo reckon that Umtiti spoke to Laporta about how hard he’s worked to overcome his injury problems and will now get opportunities “to show that he can perform at his best again” in 2021-22.
It’s a similar story over at Catalunya Radio who say the club have definitely ruled out the center-back’s exit and now think Umtiti will get chances to play this season.
Over at Sport there’s also talk that Umtiti will stay, but the Catalans still expect him to help the club’s financial situation by reducing his salary. His current deal at the Camp Nou runs until June 2023.
Umtiti’s playing time is now in the hands of Ronald Koeman who has left the Frenchman out of his squad for the first two matches against Real Sociedad and Athletic. He also described Umtiti’s situation as “complicated” in his pre-match presser before the trip to San Mames.
The Frenchman does have a chance of making the squad for Sunday’s match at Getafe as Eric Garcia is suspended, Gerard Pique is injured, and Oscar Mingueza has still not been cleared to play after suffering a hamstring injury at the Tokyo Olympics.
