The midfielder’s future is uncertain

Barcelona have not called up Ilaix Moriba to start pre-season training on Saturday and reportedly won’t officially promote the youngster to the first team until he’s put pen to paper on a new deal.

The Catalan giants announced on Friday the players called to start the first training session ahead of the new campaign and it was telling that Moriba’s name was not on the list.

Here’s who has received the call:

First team: Ter Stegen, Dest, Piqué, Pjanić, Dembélé, Riqui Puig, Neto, Coutinho, Sergi Roberto, Ansu Fati, Umtitim Monchu, Ilias, Gavi, Comas, Ramos Mingo, Nico, Arnau Tenas, Álex Collado, Yusuf Demir and Iñaki Peña.

The first training session is due to take place on Monday but there will be medical checks first. Injured stars Ter Stegen, Dembélé, Coutinho and Ansu Fati “will be joining the sessions whenever their injury recovery programmes allow.”

Obviously there’s quite a few names missing because of Euro 2020 and the Copa America and those players involved in the summer tournaments will return after taking some much-needed time off.

However, it’s unclear what will happen with Moriba. Mundo Deportivo report he won’t be promoted until he signs a new deal and reckons there’s little progress in talks with the youngster at the moment.

The midfielder’s “high demands” are a problem for the Catalan giants who want him to renew or else will be forced to sell. It’s a tricky situation for Barcelona and adds yet another problem to the pile ahead of the new campaign.
