Lionel Messi, Gerard Piqué, Sergi Roberto, and Sergio Busquets are likely to agree to wage cuts

FC Barcelona need players to agree to wage cuts in order to fit current players under the salary cap. Five veterans are being asked to lower their wages in order to help the team move forward.

The teams four captains are reportedly likely to agree to these wage cuts.

Lionel Messi, Gerard Piqué, Sergi Roberto, and Sergio Busquets are likely to agree to wage cuts, but Jordi Alba is reportedly a different story.

Messi in particular has reportedly already agreed to a 50% salary reduction. Meanwhile, Piqué, Roberto, and Busquets are said to be on their way to agreeing to similar reductions.

The #10 has reportedly agreed to the contract but it simply has not been signed yet, in part because the salary cap does not allow it until Barcelona lower the wage bill.

Piqué reportedly has an “understanding” with the club over the wage cut, Busquets is on his way to agreeing, and Roberto seems ready to agree to it, although the club has yet to meet with his agent.

However, Alba has not given the club signals that he’s likely to agree to the wage cut. The club are hoping this will change when club president Joan Laporta meets with him face-to-face. In addition, there is hope that once Messi signs the renewal, the other veterans will follow the captain’s example.

If the club is unable to come to terms with these players, there is one last option: to go to court. This would be a drastic choice, but the club may feel forced to use it. There are scenarios in which the club loses court cases, but they are able to at least register players for next season while the legal process plays out.
