The Catalans can go top on Thursday

The title race in Spain took yet another twist on Sunday as Barcelona beat Villarreal to keep up their title charge which received another welcome boost later in the day as leaders Atletico Madrid slipped up yet again.

The Rojiblancos faced a tricky test at San Mames against Athletic and went behind after just nine minutes when Alex Berenguer opened the scoring.

Athletic could have had a few more but were wasteful in front of goal and were then pegged back on 77 minutes when Stefan Savic headed an equalizer.

The visitors tried their best to grab a winner but were undone with four minutes of normal time remaining when Inigo Martinez headed the hosts the winner from the corner.

The result means that Barcelona will go top of the table with just five games to go on Thursday if they beat Granada at the Camp Nou in their game in hand.

It’s been another wild weekend in La Liga with Real Madrid also seeing their title hopes hit on Saturday with a goalless draw at Real Betis.

Sevilla remain in the hunt in fourth place after a 2-1 win over Granada that bizarrely saw the players called back from the dressing room to play the final minute after the referee blew his whistle too early.

The Andalusians remain outsiders but are just three points off the top and have won their last five games in a row. Next up is a visit from Athletic before Ivan Rakitic and Co take on Real Madrid.

There’s no doubt the results mean it’s been a great weekend for Barca that strengthens their title bid. Of course, there’s still a long way to go, but Barca have put themselves in a great position. Will there be a few more twists to come?
