Valencia 1-1 Barcelona: Player ratings

Yours and Sam’s scores from Sunday’s game.

Marc-André ter Stegen

In a now standard performance, ter Stegen made many saves that kept Barça in the game. Not a lot he could have done for Valencia’s goal though.

Your rating: 8

Sam’s rating: 8

Nélson Semedo

His positioning was poor for Valencia’s goal as he did not close down quick enough and allowed a runner in behind. They subsequently scored from this space.

Your rating: 6

Sam’s rating: 6

Samuel Umtiti

Three tackles and four interceptions show Umtiti was Barça’s best central defender in this game. Valencia are a good attacking side and Umtiti needed to use his pace and posting to stop them. The goal came from a Semedo mistake so Umtiti can’t really take the blame. Although he did seem to lose track of where Rodrigo was behind him.

Your rating: 8

Sam’s rating: 8

Thomas Vermaelen

Given his long absence from the team, Vermaelen did reasonably well on his return. He also had the chance to make it a dream comeback with a goal but he fired his header over the bar.

Your rating: 7

Sam’s rating: 8

Jordi Alba

A fantastic perfroamce from Alba which he topped off with a great finish. The trademark Jordi Alba run in behind has been less frequently seen since Xavi departed but it was on show here. The ball from Messi was perfect and Alba showed a striker’s technique to finish.

Your rating: 9

Sam’s rating: 9

Ivan Rakitić

Looked ineffectual again out on the wing.

Your rating: 6

Sam’s rating: 6

Sergio Busquets

Pivotal in ensuring Barcelona weren’t hurt on the break as they pushed men forward looking for a goal. Made three tackles and two interceptions.

Your rating: 8

Sam’s rating: 7

Andrés Iniesta

Kept Barcelona’s play moving along before being replaced in the 71st minute.

Your rating: 8

Sam’s rating: 7

Paulinho

With Barcelona often restricted to having long shots, this played into Paulinho’s skill set.

Your rating: 7

Sam’s rating: 7

Luis Suárez

Suárez really does look like a shadow of the player he once was. Whether it’s because he has been nursing an injury or he is just shot of confidence, the Valencia game was another example of where he offered almost nothing.

Your rating: 5

Sam’s rating: 5

Lionel Messi

Scored a legitimate goal in the first half that should have been given. The lack of goal-line technology saved Valencia from going behind. As usual, Messi was the most creative but the lack of width in the team did harm him. With the Valencia defence able to be compact it limits the space Messi has and thus impacts his effectiveness.

Your rating: 9

Sam’s rating: 8

Gerard Deulofeu

Just looks out of his depth compared to the rest of the squad. He injected some pace but his final ball came to nothing.

Your rating: 6

Sam’s rating: 5

Denis Suárez

Looked lively during his time on the pitch.

Your rating: 7

Sam’s rating: 7

Aleix Vidal

Contirubuted towards a goalscoring chance in his 20 minutes of game time.

Your rating: 6

Sam’s rating: 6

The Team

Against a good opponent, Barcelona did well to come from behind and rescue a point.

Your rating: 8

Sam’s rating: 8

Ernesto Valverde

His substitutions made a difference and his post-match comments were also very impressive.

Your rating: 7

Sam’s rating: 7

Man of the Match?
