Liga Watch: Big Win for Atletico Madrid, Malaga Finally Gets a Point

Alaves finally scores a goal as well, but Real Madrid escape with a win

Atletico Madrid have put their wobbly start of the season behind them and consolidated second place with a 2-0 victory over Sevilla. Yannick Carrasco and Antoine Griezzman got the goals for Atleti, who handed Sevilla their first loss of the season.

Sevilla was on a four-game winning streak beforehand, which had put them in second place. But it’s Atletico now who will boast of a three-game winning streak and being just four points behind Barcelona.

Barça, of course, continued their perfect start to the league season with a 3-0 win over Girona.

Valencia won a wild one at Anoeta: 3-2 over Real Sociedad, both sides finishing with 10 men. It was a back-and-forth match in which Valencia scored but La Real equalized, two times: 1-0, 1-1, 2-1, 2-2. Both sides got a player sent off, as well, though Simone Zaza finally won it in the 85th minute for Valencia, who are now fourth. Zaza, by the way, is second in the league’s goalscoring chart with 5 goals, after Lionel Messi, who has 9.

Getafe put in another good performance this term, this time demolishing Villarreal by a surprising 4-0 scoreline.

And good news for Malaga as they finally have a point this season, thanks to a dramatic 3-3 draw with Athletic Bilbao. It looked like Malaga would lose yet again as Zdravko Kuzmanovic was sent off and then Iñaki Williams put Athletic 3-1 up in the 70th minute, but thanks to quickfire goals in the 81st and 84th minute, from Paul Baysse and Diego Rolan respectively, Malaga rescued a desperately needed point from the match.

That leaves Deportivo Alaves as the only team without a point, although maybe it was harsh considering this was perhaps their best performance. Alaves finally scored their first goal of the season, against Real Madrid no less, and they were briefly level. Dani Ceballos would score another goal after having gotten the opener, though, and Madrid would win 2-1.

And in the Monday night game, two upstarts went head to head as it was Real Betis vs. Levante. It was Betis who came out on top, and how - 3-0. That’s the Beticos’ third win in a row, with one at the Santiago Bernabeu included. Betis are now tied on points for fourth place.
