Are Sevilla Contenders for La Liga?

Barcelona and Sevilla will be #1 and #2 regardless of the results tomorrow

Atletico Madrid drew again, this time against Leganes. That’s their third draw in seven games, and that puts them three points behind Barcelona. Now, the Catalans have a chance to extend that lead to six points with a win against Las Palmas. Meanwhile, Real Madrid are seven points behind Barcelona, subject to change tomorrow.

That means that seven matches into the season, what were considered Barcelona’s two main rivals for the title are doing uncharacteristically poorly.

On the other hand, Sevilla are going strong. They finished Malaga off 2-0 with goals from Ever Banega from the spot and Luis Muriel. That’s their fifth win in six games in La Liga, and enough to put them in second place for the rest of the weekend, no matter what happens.

Sevilla were a strong team under Jorge Sampaoli last year, but new coach Eduardo Berizzo hasn’t missed a beat. The team spent well in the summer, using money from the sales of Vicente Iborra to Leicester City and Vitolo to Real Madrid to give the squad depth. Banega (Internazionale) and Jesus Navas (Manchester City) returned for their second spells at the Sanchez Pizjuan. Other intriguing signings were Muriel from Sampdoria, Guido Pizarro from UANL, and Nolito from Manchester City.

Add to that mainstays such as Steven N'Zonzi, Joaquin Correa, Clement Lenglet, Sergio Escudero, and Gabriel Mercado to round out the squad and you have a talented and deep group. The question is: are they title contenders?

On paper, people wouldn’t expect it. But we’re seven matches in and for the time being they’re the clear #2 in Spain. There’s plenty of time, but until further notice, don’t count out Sevilla.
