The Catalan derby has an extra layer of rivalry.
Luis Enrique and Quique Sánchez Flores used to be friends and teammates at Real Madrid. But their relationship deteriorated, with Lucho and many other players sure that Sánchez Flores was a tattle-tale to their coach, Jorge Valdano.
Luis Enrique left for Barcelona on a free transfer and since revealed he never felt at home at Real Madrid. After becoming captain of Barcelona, an icon of the club in the 90s and early 2000s, and manager for Barcelona B and the first team, it’s safe to say Luis Enrique is now firmly a part of Barcelona and not Real Madrid.
Quique Sánchez Flores on the other hand, played most of his career at Valencia, though he served two years at Madrid, then one year at Zaragoza before retiring.
As a coach, he was a youth team manager for Real Madrid, though he never progressed there and went on a globe-trotting series of jobs such as Valencia, Benfica, Atlético Madrid, Al-Ahli, Watford, and now Espanyol.
It’s a tradition for the Barcelona and Espanyol coaches to meet and pose for a photo before the derby, but no such thing occurred this time. It’s pretty obviously because the two men haven’t spoken in 20 years and strongly dislike each other.
Both managers dodged questions about the row, with Lucho saying he was only worried about the match and his opposite number simply stating: "I'm with those that want to be with me. I consider myself a mature person. I'm not a person for these minor matters.”
