He's just a backup, so let's all calm down
There are millions of positives of being a Barcelona fan: you're always celebrating victories, you're watching beautiful football being played, you can make fun of Real Madrid. It's all great.
But there is one inherent defect we are born with as Barça fans: everything has to be huge. Everything has to mean something all the time. Everything is either super right or super wrong. Everything matters too much.
This is obviously the case with the transfer of Jasper Cillessen from Ajax, who was brought in as a replacement to Claudio Bravo, who left after two spectacular seasons to play for Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. Cillessen's signing has already started a major debate among Culés that feel like the Dutch isn't good enough to be a Barça player.
Friends, this doesn't have to be a big deal. It's that simple. Ask yourself just a few questions: Will Jasper Cillessen be the starting goalkeeper this season? No. Will he be a backup to Ter Stegen all season? Yes. Will Ter Stegen play well enough to be the undisputed starter? Yes. Is Cillessen good enough to be a backup and play a Copa del Rey game here and there, or come in as an emergency if Stegen isn't available? Of course he is.
Cillessen is nothing special. He's not bad, either. He's a BACKUP. GOALKEEPER. We've been treated to two world-class goalies for the past two years, and maybe we think this has to be the case forever. Well, Bravo just left because this CANNOT be the case forever. Ter Stegen has earned a permanent starting spot, and having another keeper as good as him on the bench is just not possible. And a rotation of goalkeepers just doesn't work anymore. Again, that's why Bravo is gone.
So Barça needed a backup, a goalkeeper with proven qualities that is good enough to replace the starting keeper but won't demand too many minutes. That's what they got in Cillessen. It's really that simple.
It doesn't have to be a big deal.
