Irish Goat’s three Gamboling Goleadores!
Barcelona, as a whole team, played an absolutely insane match on Saturday against Real Betis. It is then, ironically, harder to single out just three players out of the whole bunch. This segment is rife with subjectivity which means this is in no way a definitive ranking of who played well and who didn’t.
With the formalities out of the way, let’s choose some goleadores. Honestly, all three goleadores should read Messi, Messi, Messi, but we should try to spread the spotlight a little bit, otherwise we’ll have Messi, Messi, Messi all the time.
1st Goleador: Sergi Roberto
I can’t possibly be any happier with Sergi Roberto. The young midfielder (right back, central defender, athletic fitness coach, scout, etc. etc.) has shown resilience, both mentally and physically, and made a resounding statement of his intention of being a part of the club. His was not an easy road to a starting role in the club. Ahead of him were legends, and despite the encroaching years and the advancement of time, there was no guarantee that Sergi would get the call when one, or possibly both of Barça’s Legends, felt the ravages of old age. And even when Xavi retired, and Sergi had possibly his best shot, Barcelona kept hiring more and more midfielders. Instead of being crestfallen and giving up, Sergi worked harder and tried harder, and showed he was not going to give up, ever. I am ecstatic he didn’t. Now, our young midfielder from Reus is playing as a right back. Yes, we still feel the twinge at having lost arguably the best right back we’ve ever had, and the road towards acceptance will be a long one. Sometimes it will feel very long. We must realize it is almost impossible to try to replace someone as crucial and special as Dani Alves was for this team, so many players will feel inadequate, but Sergi has shown he has the stuff to make our withdrawal much, much more bearable.
2nd Goleador: Samuel Umtiti
Yes, I understand goleador is a bit of a misnomer for both Umititi and Sergi as they didn’t actually score any goals, but it has a nice ring to it so bear with me. Umtiti is another player that had a very good game. Again, in the win against Betis, who didn’t? The focus on Umtiti lies in his status as a recent acquisition and, quite frankly, his youth. When you find a young player with such aptitude for the game, while at the same time showing incredible capacity in reading plays and maintaining a level head, you know you have something fantastic. He played a flawless game in defense and wasn’t fazed at all at having a starting role at his new club. I hope Piqué and him continue their tour de force as our couple at the back.
3rd Goleador: Arda Turan
Arda Turan needed a game like he had against Betis. Heck, he needed a week like he had against Betis and Sevilla. He had a very tough first year in which he didn’t show the football acumen expected of him, let alone the work load he was supposed to shoulder. He lost the skipper’s trust, and was regularly passed over for other options on the bench. His morale must have taken another blow as his struggles continued with his national team, as he had a less than satisfying run in the Euro with Turkey. It must have been a huge weight off of his shoulders when he started enjoying some measure of success this year with Barça. I am sure now we will start seeing his best side, and we will see another successful acquisition bear fruits. Thus, he is my third goleador for what his success signifies for this team, and for Arda himself.
Please, I would really enjoy seeing what your choices would have been for this match’s goleadores, as like I said this segment is very subjective and your opinion is as valuable as mine. I hope you find this segment enjoyable and hopefully I can make it a common recurrence!
