UEFA Champions League: Paris Saint-Germain 1-3 FC Barcelona: Player Ratings

A detailed, player-by-player breakdown of Barcelona's impressive Champions League win against PSG.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen
8.1

Minutes played: 90

Passes: 20

Pass Accuracy: 90 %

Shots Faced: 4

Saves Made: 3

Clearances: 2

Arron says: 7.5

For the majority of the match, ter Stegen put in a relatively underwhelming performance in the Barcelona goal. He was claiming most aerial balls without much threat owing to PSG's poor delivery, but his distribution was below standard and his tendency to rush from goal could have caused as many problems as it solved. And then ter Stegen was called into action by Edinson Cavani's fierce volley and somehow found a way to keep it out. Nicely done MAtS, nicely done...

Martin Montoya
6.6

For some reason, some Cules were sure that Montoya wasn't good enough to start against PSG. Then, Lucho kept the faith in the Catalan and what happened? PSG barely threatened down his side all throughout the 80 minutes he spent on the pitch. That's as a result of his strong play, not luck or anything else one might want to use to discredit Monty; more of this and maybe he might have a long-term future at the club after all.

Gerard Pique
7.7

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 89

Passes: 79

Pass Accuracy: 92 %

Tackles: 5

Interceptions: 1

Clearances: 1

Fouls : 2

Arron says: 8.5

Cavani was poor on Wednesday night and a lot of his troubles were owing to the central defensive pairing. He couldn't use his mobility to threaten Pique, and he couldn't use his height to trouble Mascherano either. Pique rarely put a foot wrong -- even his yellow card was a questionable call -- so I'm giving him a high mark to reflect another stellar performance.

Javier Mascherano
8.0

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 96

Passes: 89

Pass Accuracy: 93 %

Tackles: 4

Interceptions: 1

Clearances: 0

Aerial Duels Won: 2

Fouls: 1

Arron says: 8.5

And if Pique deserves it, so does Mascherano. His incredible sliding challenge stopped Cavani in his tracks during one of the most dangerous attacks of the match and his all-round tenacity helped end many other attempted PSG attacks. Watch out Jeremy Mathieu -- you might just have some competition after all.

Jordi Alba
7.6

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 97

Passes: 82

Pass Accuracy: 90 %

Shots/Shots on Target: 0/0

Tackles: 3

Interceptions: 2

Clearances: 4

Key Passes : 0

Turnovers : 3

Arron says: 7.5

Much like Montoya down the right, Alba helped shut down his flank for the majority of the match, only rarely experiencing any trouble with Javier Pastore, Ezequiel Lavezzi and even Lucas Moura. Offensively, I was left disappointed with the quality of his passing as he often played poor passes to Neymar, but other than that minor criticism, I thought it was a decent showing from Alba.

Sergio Busquets
7.7

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 22

Passes: 90

Pass Accuracy: 90 %

Tackles: 4

Interceptions: 2

Shots/Shots on Target: 0/0

Clearances: 0

Aerial Duels Won: 4

Turnovers: 1

Key passes: 0

Sam says: 7.5

Playing in the Champions League usually means higher skilled opponents which usually means Busquets focuses on the defensive side more, he showed this through his four tackles and two interceptions which limited PSG to few counterattacks and more often when they did get through it was a long through ball that looped over Busquets. His passing was also very good, registering the most completed passes of anyone on the field.

Ivan Rakitić
7.1

Minutes played: 73

Touches: 84

Passes: 70

Pass Accuracy: 96 %

Shots/Shots on Target: 1/0

Turnovers: 1

Key Passes: 1

Successful Dribbles : 1

Tackles: 4

Sam says: 7.0

A solid game from Rakitić in which he helped maintain midfield superiority for Barça. Cabaye, Matudi and Rabiot are no slouches and Rakitić needed to produce crisp, precise passing to help Barça dominate the match. He did that with a pass success rate of 95.7% and this really helped Barça control the ball for the majority of the game. His defensive work was also good with four tackles and an interception.

Andres Iniesta
6.8

Minutes played: 52

Touches: 47

Passes: 43

Pass Accuracy: 86 %

Shots/Shots on Target: 0 /0

Fouls Won: 1

Turnovers: 0

Tackles: 2

Key Passes: 1

Successful Dribbles : 0

Sam says: 7.0

A night in the wars for Iniesta who sadly ended the game prematurely on a stretcher. However, before his early exit, he started the game brightly by linking well with the front three and the defence. His passing was little less accurate than usual but this reflected the whole team’s play as they played the first half without the level of precision they are used to. Whether it was part of PSG’s plans to roughhouse Iniesta or it was just a couple of late challenges, there did seem to be a few worrying signs for Barça fans. The first came from a Cabaye tackle that caught Iniesta’s ankle in an award place and the second was a collision that damaged his back which forced him to retire early.

Luis Suarez
9.4

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 42

Passes: 29

Pass Accuracy: 83 %

Shots/Shots on Target: 3/3

Turnovers: 1

Successful Dribbles: 4

Key Passes: 1

Fouls Won: 1

Tackles : 1

Ahmed says: 9.5

The difference maker on the night, without a shadow of a doubt. Suarez nutmegged David Luiz twice just prior to scoring. He scored Barcelona’s second with a wonderful individual slalom past several players from the right into the PSG penalty area, while the third was also sensational with a jaw-dropping strike into the top corner that is made of dreams. Add the usual on and off-the-ball movement, intensity and strength and it’s easy to see why he has scored six goals in six games in this competition this season.

Lionel Messi
8.3

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 97

Passes: 78

Pass Accuracy: 82 %

Shots/Shots on Target: 3 /1

Fouls Won: 1

Successful Dribbles: 7

Key Passes: 1

Turnovers: 4

Tackles: 0

Ahmed says: 9.0

Didn’t score but was nonetheless mesmerising. Hit the post early on and then brilliantly assisted Neymar for the opener. As the match went on (and with the introduction of Xavi), Messi got more and more room to roam in the final third. He radiates class each time he’s anywhere near the ball.

Neymar
8.5

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 78

Passes: 59

Pass Accuracy: 81 %

Shots/Shots on Target: 4/2

Fouls Won: 1

Key Passes: 0

Successful Dribbles: 4

Turnovers: 4

Ahmed says: 9.0

A constant threat throughout the match and put Barcelona ahead with some Thierry Henry-esque finishing. Even though he was often double marked, his blistering pace and dribbling abilities gave him a clear advantage over the likes of van der Wiel. Neymar caused havoc in the final third and is re-finding his form just at the right time.

Xavi
7.8

Minutes played: 38

Touches: 58

Passes: 55

Pass Accuracy: 96 %

Key Passes : 1

Arron says: 7.5

There aren't any words to describe how brilliant Xavi is, at least words that will do him justice, because really "excellent" or "world-class" or "irreplaceable" aren't any better than slamming your fist into a keyboard and seeing what turns up. The control he brought to the midfield was vital, helping us close out the game and really conserve our energy ahead of that crucial La Liga clash with Valencia on Saturday. Long live the King.

Jeremy Mathieu6.0

Minutes played: 17

Touches: 21

Passes: 15

Pass Accuracy: 100 %

Clearances : 3

Arron says: 6.5

Yeah...after a couple of important goals in his previous appearances I think we were all hoping for Mathieu to extend his run. Just preferably at the other end. His own goal won't cost us at all, nor was it really that bad a mistake, but hey, who wouldn't have wanted to have won by three goals rather than two?

Adriano Correia
6.4

Minutes played: 11

Touches: 13

Passes: 10

Pass Accuracy: 100 %

Tackles : 1

Arron says: 7.5

Mascherano's sliding challenge was excellent, and then Adriano raised the bar tenfold, at least in my opinion with a sensational last-ditch, last-man tackle as the game was coming to an end. If he gets that wrong, PSG have a penalty and a man advantage and believe me, Barca's advantage suddenly doesn't look so convincing.

The Team8.5

Passes: 790

Pass Accuracy: 90 %

Shots/Shots on Target: 11 /6

Tackles: 26

Aerial Battles Won: 55 %

Fouls Won/Committed: 10/12

Arron says: 10.0

Perfection. The pressing was amongst the best I'd seen since Guardiola left; the passing was crisp, the tempo was good and by golly, we took our goals magnificently. Oh, and did I mention that we rarely got out of third gear? Absolutely dominant.

Luis Enrique
8.2

Arron says: 10.0

Also perfect. The setup was immaculate, and his selection was flawless. Even his subs worked well, if we exclude Mathieu's unlucky clearance.

MOTM - Luis Suarez
81%

Bostjan says: Suarez

When you dominate a match as much as Suarez did it shouldn't came as a surprise that Suarez also dominated the Man of the Match voting. Earning places in the top three were Messi and Neymar who picked up nine and four percent of the votes, respectively.
