UEFA Champions League: Paris Saint-Germain 3-2 FC Barcelona: Player Ratings

A detailed, player-by-player breakdown of Barcelona's disappointing Champions League loss against Paris Saint-Germain

Making his second Barcelona appearance ter Stegen failed to impress. He made all the easy plays - a couple routine saves, collected some high crosses, even made a clearance 25 yards from goal - however, he was unsuccessful in any of the more difficult plays that in the end could’ve been enough for Barcelona to leave Paris with a point. I’m not blaming him for the first goal, that one was unstoppable for any goalkeeper, but he made a big mistake leaving the line on the second goal. Had he just stayed on the line it would’ve been an easy save for the German. The third goal, I don’t know if I can actually blame him for letting that one in, probably not, but it’s never good when the goalkeeper gets beaten five-hole (through the legs).

Talk about false hope after the last game… Alves did pick up an assist on Neymar’s goal, but apart from that I honestly can’t remember many good plays by the Brazilian. Well, I can remember a good clearance midway through the first half, but that’s really it. However, I can recall several poor plays by Alves, none worse than the one that led to PSG’s first goal when Alves tried to run by Lucas Moura, only to be stripped of the ball and in the process of trying to win it back Alves was called for a handball and booked for it. From that free kick PSG took the lead.

Javier Mascherano

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 75

Passes: 66

Pass Accuracy: 97 %

Interceptions: 2

Aerial Duels Won: 0

Bostjan says: 6.5

Contrary to popular belief I actually think Mascherano had a pretty good game, you know, apart from his coverage on David Luiz on the first goal. But it’s hard to blame Mascherano for that because he’s at such a big physical disadvantage that he really couldn’t do much more. He made most of his important defensive plays late in the game, after Barcelona took Alves off the pitch, including some great plays one-on-one with Cavani. But the sequence I liked the most was when Mascherano lost the ball on the right side near midfield, but tracked the PSG player all the way back and stole the ball back near the penalty area.

Jeremy Mathieu

Aerial Duels Won: 0

Like Mascherano, Mathieu also allowed Cavani very little space to operate. On counter attacks he was always in good position, but on a few occasions I had a feeling like he was giving opposing players a little bit too much space, maybe respecting the wingers’ speed too much. He gave up a corner kick on a play similar to that, the corner kick that resulted in PSG’s second goal of the game.

Jordi Alba
5.0

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 89

Passes: 65

Pass Accuracy: 86%

Shots/Shots on Target: 1/0

Tackles: 3

Interceptions: 1

Clearances: 2

Fouls: 0

Key passes: 2

Bostjan says: 5.5

This was probably Alba’s worst game of the season as apart from offering width in attack he had very little positive effect on the game. He spent a large part of the game high up the pitch, but there his passing was often wasteful which led to quick counter attacks for which he seemed to casual running back. But even when he was in defense he allowed a lot of traffic, mostly to PSG wingers, but it was the full-back, Gregory Van der Wiel, who made him look like a fool when he easily beat him to send a cross in, which turned out to be the assist on the game-winning goal. However, Alba came close to being the hero in the 82nd minute, but his shot on goal, was blocked by a diving Marquinhos.

Sergio Busquets
4.8

Aerial Duels Won: 2

Arron says: 6.0

Overall, a sub-standard performance from the Catalan pivote who struggled to establish control in the midfield up against the industrious Blaise Matuidi, not to mention the hard-working PSG frontline. Busquets’ passing accuracy remained as high as ever, but make no mistake, this wasn’t one of his better nights in a Barça jersey.

Andres Iniesta
5.9

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 89

Passes: 73

Pass Accuracy: 9 2%

Shots/Shots on Target: 3/0

Turnovers: 1

Key Passes: 1

Successful Dribbles: 3

Arron says: 7 .0

Finally, a good performance. Or at least an encouraging one. Andrés Iniesta provided the assist to Lionel Messi’s equaliser and while that tie was ultimately short-lived, it was a timely moment of magic from Iniesta. The instantaneous control, the weighting of the pass and the identity of its receiver – this was vintage Barcelona. If only we could have seen a little more of that over the course of the 90 minutes.

Ivan Rakitić
5.2

Minutes played: 69

Touches: 84

Passes: 69

Pass Accuracy: 94%

Shots/Shots on Target: 1/0

Aerial Duels Won: 1

Tackles: 3

Turnovers: 1

Key Passes: 1

Interceptions: 1

Arron says: 6.0

Another disappointing performance from a Barça midfielder – Ivan Rakitić has been imperious thus far this season yet on this night, he was off of his game and the rest of the team suffered. Would Xavi have been a better option? Hindsight is of course 20:20 but is arguable that the Blaugrana improved with his introduction on the 70 minute mark.

Pedro
3.8

Minutes played: 62

Touches: 29

Passes: 23

Pass Accuracy: 83%

Shots/Shots on Target: 1/0

Turnovers: 0

Successful Dribbles: 1

Key Passes: 2

Tackles: 1

Fouls Won: 0

Arron says: 5.0

The less said about Pedro, the better. Also, the less frustrated I get – so it’s a win-win for us all. Shape up, or get ready for a place on the bench.

Lionel Messi
7.9

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 82

Passes: 59

Pass Accuracy: 92%

Shots/Shots on Target: 2/1

Fouls Won: 2

Successful Dribbles: 7

Key Passes: 3

Turnovers: 3

Tackles: 1

Arron says: 8.0

Maybe I’m being overly harsh, but I’m not really a subscriber to the "Messi can do no wrong" club – so yes, while he scored and was generally good, I felt he could have been better. Noticing that the game was a little more open than it should have been, the onus was on Messi to track one of the PSG midfielders, or perhaps help out when David Luiz went on one of his expeditions forward. Obviously, his goal was magical but on a night where Barça were desperately lacking in so many areas, I was quietly hoping for a little more from Leo...

Neymar
7.2

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 66

Passes: 41

Pass Accuracy: 88 %

Shots/Shots on Target: 4/1

Fouls Won: 2

Key Passes: 2

Successful Dribbles: 1

Turnovers: 4

Arron says: 7.0

Anonymous at times, and magnificent at others; Neymar clearly felt the need to summarise his stint at Barça in one match last night, as he dallied between being great and utterly frustrating. The goal was a moment of pure brilliance. The nonchalance of the finish was just staggering and brilliantly timed to boot, yet by and large, Neymar didn’t get it done. Least he wasn’t the only one though.

Munir El Haddadi
6.0

Minutes played: 28

Touches: 25

Passes: 18

Pass Accuracy: 83 %

Key Passes : 2

Shots/Shots on Target : 1/0

Arron says: 7.0

Replacing Pedro, it would have been difficult for Munir to make a negative impact – yet it was encouraging that he looked so good. Fractions of an inch separated him from a glorious equaliser, but in truth, we probably didn’t deserve one anyway.

Xavi
6.2

Minutes played: 21

Touches: 40

Passes: 32

Pass Accuracy: 84%

Tackles : 1

Arron says: 6.5

I thought we improved with Xavi’s introduction; whether that’s down to the fresh legs, the tired minds of the PSG contingent or Xavi’s talent, I don’t know.

Sandro Ramirez
5.2

Minutes played: 7

Touches: 5

Passes: 3

Pass Accuracy: 100 %

Arron says: N/A

Sandro didn’t have long enough to really make an impact, yet he did come close – even if his finish off Neymar’s pass wasn’t entirely accurate.

The Team5.2

Passes: 741

Pass Accuracy: 91 %

Shots/Shots on Target: 15 /2

Tackles: 19

Aerial Battles Won: 30 %

Fouls Won/Committed: 8 /9

Arron says: 5.0

Not good enough. However, was this a one-off "bad day at the office" or a sign that things aren’t quite as rosy as they seemed at the Camp Nou and under Luis Enrique? Will things improve with the arrival of Luis Suarez? Again, another impossible question to answer – we’re just going to have to be patient and wait for an answer. Unless you need to sell a paper, in which case, the sky is falling.

Luis Enrique
5.0

Arron says: 5.5

Did Lucho get it wrong, or did the players just not deliver on what was an otherwise sound gameplan? I think they’ve all got to share the blame for this one – although the only Enrique decisions I would question involved starting Pedro and not starting Piqué.

MOTM - Lionel Messi
77%

Bostjan says: Messi

Another runaway Man of the Match victory for the Argentine, but that's again because he was Barcelona's best players on the pitch. It might not have been one of his best displays, but when you're teammates are, well, poor, it's hard not to win the award. Neymar came in at a distant second with 10% of the votes while Mascherano finished in third with 5%.
