FC Barcelona won the first ever edition of the Catalan Super Cup at the Estadi Montilivi in Girona this evening after the game with RCD Espanyol ended 1-1 after 90 minutes. Espanyol pulled back through Arbilla shortly after the break, and with no further scoring the game went to penalties. The shootout went Barça’s way, as it also had against the same side in the last two finals of the Copa Catalunya.

Due to problems finding room in the fixture list for the tournament, the Catalan Football Federation (FCF) decided to change the format of the Copa Catalunya, so that first division clubs FC Barcelona and Espanyol meet in this one-off game for the Super Cup title, while teams in the second and third division (and the winners of the Catalan First Division) contest the old trophy. There is also a Copa Catalunya Amateur for teams playing in the lower leagues.
