A tight affair was decided by an own goal

The most anticipated match in the first week of Euro 2020 was mostly a disappointment as France and Germany mostly denied each other for 90 minutes and the reigning World Cup winners came out with a narrow 1-0 victory.

Antoine Griezmann played all 90 minutes and was pretty quiet all night, while Ousmane Dembélé came on as a late substitute to waste a little time for France.

The game followed pretty much the same script for its entirety: Germany had close to 60% of the possession and tried to find spaces while France defended in a low block and looked to counter attack.

Mats Hummels scored the only goal of the game, but it wasn’t how he wanted it to happen as the Borussia Dortmund defender tried clearing a cross from Hernández but found the top corner of his own net:

France’s plan worked much better throughout the night, thanks in large part to a great midfield performance by the French tag team of Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kanté who controlled everything in the center of the park, and Mbappé had a couple of ridiculous displays of speed and strength on the break.

France had two goals disallowed in the second half for offsides by Mbappé, but they didn’t end up costing Les Bleus who were barely challenged by the German attack in the second half, except for the last few moments of added time.

Portugal and France start off with wins, and Germany have work to do if they want a chance to qualify for the knockout stages. Unfortunately, they get Portugal next while France face Hungary with a chance to qualify with a win depending on how the other game goes.
