The club needs to raise funds and reduce the wage bill
Lionel Messi is expected to extend his stay at Barcelona this summer and sign a new two-year deal at the Camp Nou, but his contract renewal may have ramifications for the rest of the squad.
The captain’s new contract could even mean that Barca will end up having to wave goodbye to a big name such as Antoine Griezmann in the summer transfer window in order to balance the books.
L’Esportiu reports Messi’s new deal will see the Argentine earn “about 100 million euros a season” at Barcelona which will be spread over five years. While the club is thrilled to be keeping hold of Messi the report adds his new contract “is a headache for the sports management.”
In order to comply with La Liga regulations Barca will need to free up a massive €200 million from the wage bill. Salary cuts and sales will be required but it’s also possible a big name may have to be sold and that’s where Griezmann comes into the equation.
It’s thought that Griezmann hasn’t really had the impact expected of a player who cost €120m in his two years at Barcelona and still doesn’t really have a natural place in the starting XI.
The Frenchman still has three years left on his contract and wants to see it out but is said to be set for talks with Barca after the Euros. Griezmann has been in good form for France at the tournament and will take on Switzerland in the last 16 on Monday.
