The left-back slot is under scrutiny
Barcelona are reportedly thinking about possible replacements for Jordi Alba at left-back amid speculation the Spain international could be moved on this summer.
This week has seen a couple of reports that Barca are willing to listen to offers for Alba as they look to ease their financial problems by trimming the wage bill.
Mundo Deportivo reckon that Barcelona’s number one priority, and a player whose name has been written in capital letters for a long time” at the Camp Nou, is Jose Luis Gaya.
The defender is contracted to Los Che until 2023 but hasn’t agreed a renewal. This isn’t the first time he’s been linked with Barca and has reportedly been on the club’s radar for a while.
Yet the 26-year-old isn’t the only player Barcelona are thinking about. MD have another report which states Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso is also a possibility.
The full-back was apparently set to move to the Camp Nou in January to replace Junior Firpo but neither transfer ended up happening.
Alonso is not a regular at Stamford Bridge and is seen as a versatile option given he can play at left-back and in central defense if required.
A change at left-back would be a bit of a surprise, particularly given Jordi Alba said at the start of the month his intention is to see out his contract and stay at Barca for life.
Barca’s financial situation means the club may have to listen to offers for any players, but Alba’s latest comments suggests he has no intention of swapping clubs this summer.
