Yeah, Denis Seems Totally Done at Barcelona

He’s getting very little playing time and basically seems like strictly a backup option

When FC Barcelona bought Denis Suárez back from Villarreal two seasons ago, a lot was hoped from the former Barça B midfielder. However, despite flashes of brilliance, Suárez has yet to establish himself at Barcelona.

Ernesto Valverde has not used him terribly often this season, but it’s even worse these days. He’s out of the squad once again for the Las Palmas match. He’s not made the squad for four straight league games. He hasn’t played since January 17th in any competition. That day, he played against Espanyol in Barcelona’s 0-1 loss at Cornellà.

With the arrival of Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool, and the fact Andrés Iniesta is still there, there’s not a lot of space for an attacking midfielder on the left. The fact is Suárez is not as strong defensively, and that has made Valverde only trust him in one spot. A spot currently occupied by a legend and also the club’s record signing.

Theoretically Suárez could remain at Barcelona if Andrés Iniesta leaves next summer. But maybe Denis doesn’t want to stay even then. Napoli has been in for him a couple times. Unless something drastic changes, it seems Denis is destined to not feature much this season and to leave next summer.

WATCH: What Happened With Gerard Piqué’s Knee?

Another brilliant video from El Dia Después

Alarms sounded as Gerard Piqué went down, clutching his knee in Barcelona’s 6-1 win over Girona. Did he aggravate an injury he suffered against Espanyol, that kept him out of the game against Getafe?

Well, footage from El Dia Después gives us a clue. It seems the medical staff told Ernesto Valverde that Piqué’s knee discomfort was unrelated to the previous injury, and that there was no need to sub him off.

However, after seeing Piqué struggle with pain for a bit, Valverde decided to take the player out. But the defender seemed to disagree with the decision, and Valverde later said during the press conference that it was purely a precaution, and he could have stayed on.

Barcelona’s Arthur deal is all agreed, according to Gremio

A deal to bring Arthur to Barcelona appears to be inching ever closer as Mundo Deportivo have provided an update today.

The club quote a source close to Gremio president Romildo Bolzan as saying that it’s all agreed and all that needs doing is for the contracts to be signed, sealed and delivered.

“Everything is agreed, the numbers are already closed. All that remains is to draft the contracts, which can probably be finalized this week,

Source | Mundo Deportivo

The latest reports suggest that Barcelona’s deal for Arthur will not see the Brazilian arrive until January 2019.

The midfielder is expected to stay at Gremio until next winter, although Barca may have an option to bring the deal forward, much like they did with Yerry Mina.

Valverde talks resting Suarez, Pique fitness, Dembele & Las Palmas

Ernesto Valverde has faced the press ahead of tomorrow’s La Liga clash at Las Palmas and was asked a range of questions.

Unsurprisingly a few of those were directed at whether he would rest Luis Suarez, who is a yellow card away from a ban, but he would not reveal if the striker would play or not.

Here’s a look at the best bits.

Valverde on possibility of resting Messi or Suarez

We’ll see tomorrow but regardless we are coming off a game on Saturday, we’ve had plenty of time to rest for this game and I’ll say it again I don’t want to worry about the games coming up. I want to focus on this one, the three points are important to keep the margin from those who are behind us.

Valverde on Gerard Pique

He’s fine, he trained normally yesterday. If he’s playing it’s because he’s fit. I had to take him off against Girona, that was nothing to do with his injury. He took a strong knock knee to knee but that doesn’t have anything to do with the injury he had against Espanyol. If he’s fit, he’s ready to play, there’s nothing strange going on there.

Valvede on Ousmane Dembele

He’s training well, like the others, but it’s all about what happens in competition. The player may or may not play regularly depending on how they compete. Playing is not the same as training. It’s a very demanding club and there’s lots of competition. He played the whole game the other day. He needs to get used to being a decisive player. He’s taking steps forward and is progressing, and little by little he’s getting better.

Valverde on whether Barca are in a hurry to win the league

We haven’t won anything yet, we want to keep winning and that’s it. You can win a title any way, you can win it later or sooner, but we know there’s a long way to go and we know Atletico is a tough team. They are playing a very good season and we’ll see what happens. We have three points coming up and we’ll see what happens on Sunday.

It is clear Atletico will fight to the end. I have no doubt that he [Diego Simeone] does not think the league is over, of course not.

Valverde on Las Palmas

They won’t run and hide. They will pressure us, they always do. They will come out and play and try not to get worn down. Maybe we’ve overcome that before, but it doesn’t mean we will do that tomorrow. They are a good team and have improved defensively recently.

Valverde on Ter Stegen

It’s a fundamental position for us. But I also want to talk about Cillessen because he’s a player who is playing well also. They both are, they are at a very high level and are the best in the world in my opinion. Because of the way we play, our system, the way we take the initiative, I think he’s a player that we really need.

Valverde on Las Masia players

Alena has trained with us a few times. Oriol Busquets looks like he has a problem and won’t be able to play. But we’re always asking Barca B players to help out when we’re training. We are looking pretty good from a health standpoint, apart from Semedo, but we count on Barca B to help us out all the time

Valverde on if Vidal will come in for Semedo

That’s one of the things we are looking at with Aleix, we’ll see how things go. He played there in pre-season and after pre-season he hasn’t done it again, we moved him up the field a little bit to get more involved in the play.

Injured Deulofeu confirms he will be out for ‘some time’

Watford winger Gerard Deulofeu will be out for “some time” after injuring his ankle in a 1-0 win against Everton. Deulofeu is of course on-loan from Barcelona and was getting some good playing time for Watford.

“Unfortunately I will be out from the pitch for some time but I will work very hard everyday in order to be back and ready to play,” Deulofeu said on Twitter. “Thank you for all the support.”

Watford manger Javi Gracia discussed the injury and what it would mean for his side after the game.

“I don’t know what happened. He’s feeling pain in his right foot and we’ll have to see,”

“It would be a real blow if Deulofeu was to miss a number of games, especially as he looks to have settled in quickly at Vicarage Road.”

Javi Gracia | Source

It remains unclear as to how long Deulofeu will miss, but it’ll most certainly hurt Watford in the meantime.

Atletico departures could benefit Barca

Diego Simeone is left with a pretty small squad

There’s no question that Atletico Madrid have emerged as Barcelona’s biggest title rivals this season, and the two clubs will meet at Camp Nou on Sunday in La Liga.

Ahead of the game Diego Simeone’s side have had a pretty interesting few days. On Monday the club announced that Yannick Carrasco and Nico Gaitan had moved to Chinese Super League side Dalian Yifang.

And today has seen another departure as goalkeeper Miguel Angel Moya has secured a move to Real Sociedad.

Now while Gaitain and Moya have barely featured in this campaign, Carrasco’s departure is an odd one. He may not have been at his best this season, but 24 seems a remarkably young age to be making the move to the Far East.

Anyway, Atletico have clearly deemed all three surplus to requirements and presumably have also been in real need of the money raised from their sales.

Interestingly, and particularly from Barcelona’s point of view, Diego Simeone is now left with a squad of just 19 players (17 outfield players and two goalkeepers) with which to complete the season.

Atletico have another 13 La Liga fixtures to complete, starting with tonight’s visit from Leganes, and they are also still in the Europa League where they have been drawn against Lokomotiv Moscow in the last 16.

Although Barcelona have a seven-point lead and are big favourites to clinch the title, there’s still some way to go and victory for Atletico on Sunday would cut the gap and give them real belief.

However, any injuries between now and the end of the season will hit Atletico hard and the small squad means that Simeone has fewer opportunities to rotate as we head into the business end of the season.

Rumors: Pogba, Griezmann, Meyer and Denis Suarez

Barca interested in Pogba, but he’s too expensive

Today’s rumors start with some interesting claims that Barcelona are apparently interested in Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba.

According to OK Diario’s Eduardo Inda, Barca are keen but only if they can land the France international for less than €100 million.

That seems unlikely, although there does appear to be friction between Pogba and manager Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford.

His agent Mino Raiola has already offered Pogba to Real Madrid but Zinedine Zidane’s side are unwilling to negotiate, while Barcelona will if there is a chance of getting the price right.

Griezmann in, Denis Suarez out

Back in Spain and the Antoine Griezmann to Barcelona talk is getting louder and the latest update comes from Cat Radio.

They claim that the club have already agreed a deal with Griezmann to move to Camp Nou in the summer and Ernesto Valverde is a big fan.

Griezmann’s arrival will means departures, with Denis Suarez the first name mentioned in the report and Jasper Cillessen may also follow him out of the club.

Max Meyer linked with Barcelona and Arsenal

And finally today we end with news that Schalke midfielder Max Meyer has turned down a second contract offer from the Bundesliga club.

According to Sport Bild (via ESPN) Barcelona and Arsenal are both interested in the 22-year-old.

Schalke say they “won’t wait much longer” for Meyer to make a decision on his future as they want to plan for next season. Meyer’s current deal expires in the summer.

How should Barca line up against Las Palmas?

Alcacer a doubt for Las Palmas after missing training

The forward had been tipped to make a rare start

Barcelona have confirmed that Paco Alcacer missed training with gastroenteritis ahead of the club’s trip to Las Palmas on Thursday.

Alcacer was being tipped to feature, particularly with Luis Suarez just a game away from a booking and with Atletico Madrid up next.

It remains to be seen if Alcacer will be fit enough to feature which could disrupt Valverde’s plans for the game.

Barca do have plenty of other options but if Alcacer does miss out it will be a blow for the 24-year-old who has started just twice in 2018 so far.

Transfer Rumors: Locker Room Ready to Welcome Griezmann

Umtiti is his biggest fan

FC Barcelona’s heavyweights are eager to welcome Antoine Griezmann, claims Diario SPORT. The Atlético Madrid forward has been a rumored acquisition for next summer.

Aside from his skill and resume, Barcelona are said to value the fact that the French forward has lived in Spain for so long. He knows Spanish, is comfortable living in the country, and is successful in the league. No long adaptation period is foreseen.

Griezmann’s biggest fan in the Barça locker room is said to be Samuel Umtiti, his teammate in the French national team. Barcelona also have a few others in the French contingent like Lucas Digne and Ousmane Dembélé.

Speaking of Dembélé, it remains to be seen just how Ernesto Valverde can fit him, Luis Suárez, Philippe Coutinho, Lionel Messi, AND Griezmann into the same side. Or would someone be dropped?

Transfer Rumors: Barcelona Interested in Alderweireld

According to The Independent

FC Barcelona are “monitoring Toby Alderweireld’s situation at Tottenham Hotspur, with a view to a serious bid in the summer,” according to The Independent. The Belgian’s contract runs out in 2020 but there is reportedly a clause that would allow him to leave for £25m in the summer of 2019.

The report says there is “currently an impasse in negotiations,” with Alderweireld’s representatives hoping to get wages similar to those Virgil van Dijk gets at Liverpool, reported around £180,000 a week.

Barcelona are said to be ready to try to make a bid this summer for the 28-year-old defender, as Tottenham’s position would be weakened given the looming release clause. Manchester United have also shown interest, but reportedly, they’re reluctant to deal with Spurs’ chairman Daniel Levy.

Tebas slams Suarez over attempt to get himself booked

La Liga’s president Javier Tebas had a few choice words for Barcelona’s Luis Suarez this week. Suarez was seen in Barcelona’s 6-1 win over Girona seemingly trying to get his fifth yellow of the season. This would in turn get his ban over with before Barcelona’s key match with Atletico Madrid.

The suspension would take place against Las Palmas which would be much better for Barcelona obviously. Tebas was not a fan of the actions and made it clear that he will seek a ban for Suarez.

“He deserves a ban for trying to get his fifth yellow card,” the LaLiga chief said. “I’m going to work hard to ensure that football is free of tricks and cheating.”

Source | AS

How all of this plays out will be fascinating. The actions didn’t end up working out for Suarez and it would be somewhat strange for a punishment to take place regarding a foul that never resulted in a card.

Puyol: ‘Piqué’s Gesture to Espanyol Fans Was Restrained’

Puyol defended his former FC Barcelona teammate

Carles Puyol was never afraid to tell his teammates when they’ve gone too far. The former FC Barcelona captain became famous for his insistence on fair play, going as far as restraining and chiding his teammates if they had gone too far.

But he saw no reason to reprimand Gerard Piqué this time after the defender had done a “shh” gesture towards Espanyol fans during the two teams’ 1-1 draw in La Liga.

“That gesture has been done by many, many players, and they’ve given it more importance than is required,” Puyol said. “I don’t know what the fans were saying, but in other games, they had insulted him and his family, so I believe that he was actually restrained.”

Puyol continued: “It’s not fair what he has had to live through but he is capable of enduring it perfectly. He focuses on the game, and that’s all.”

Speaking about Piqué being branded a “provoker,” Puyol said that ”he says what he thinks and it’s not easy to endure what he has to endure.”

“We only focus on what Gerard says,” Puyol reasoned, “but, what about what others say to him?”

Puyol also was full of praise for Samuel Umtiti: “Last season he did very well. He is becoming one of the best centerbacks. It’s not easy defending with so many meters behind you. You feel exposed. But he has adapted perfectly. He is a leader, one of the best in the world.”

Puyi also expressed satisfaction with the work of Ernesto Valverde, saying the coach is doing “extraordinary” work and “knows the team’s philosophy and has adapted very well.”

Should Valverde rest Luis Suarez against Las Palmas?

Barcelona face Las Palmas on Thursday night and ahead of the game Luis Suarez is in superb form.

The striker took home the match ball after bagging a hat-trick against Girona and then spent the closing minutes of the match trying unsuccessfully to pick up the booking which would have seen him suspended for Las Palmas.

However, the Uruguayan failed in his task meaning he is available for Thursday’s trip, but at risk of missing Sunday’s huge game against Atletico Madrid if he picks up a booking.

It would therefore seem a good idea to rest Suarez, particularly as Valverde has plenty of attacking options with both Paco Alcacer and Ousmane Dembele fit again.

However, Valverde has already shown this season he is willing to risk players and likes to play the strongest team possible.

Just think back to November when he picked Pique to play against Leganes, and the centre-back duly picked up the booking that ruled him out of the next game against Valencia.

Barca will be huge favourites to beat Las Palmas who go into the game in the bottom three and in real trouble.

It’s also worth noting that the team have the second worst defensive record in La Liga and have conceded 52 goals in just 25 matches.

So let us know what you think! Should Valverde rest Suarez? And if so who do you think should come in up front for Barcelona? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Date and time confirmed for El Clasico at Camp Nou

La Liga president Javier Tebas has said that the second Clasico of the season will be held on Sunday 6th May at 8.45 pm (CET).

Tebas was talking on Cadena SER’s ‘El Larguero’ programme and said the kick off time was to appease the American market, with the game in December having started at 1pm.

Barcelona won that game at the Santiago Bernabeu 3-0 thanks to goals from Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi and Aleix Vidal.

After the game Barcelona will have only three La Liga matches left against Villarreal, Levante and Real Sociedad, so the Clasico may have a bearing on the title race.

The game also comes just days after the second legs of the Champions League semi-finals (which are slated for the 1st and 2nd May).

Barcelona and Real Madrid will both hope to still be involved, although there’s some way still to go before they are assured of a place in the last four of the competition.

Eriksen’s agent talks Barca interest

Christian Eriksen’s agent Martin Schoots has been talking to Danish newspaper BT about rumoured interest in the Tottenham star.

Barcelona have been linked with a move, although not recently, and Schoots claims there has been interest from Camp Nou.

“I don’t comment on rumours much. But when clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United are mentioned, it’s always a compliment.”

“Since Christian was 14 years old, big clubs have shown interest. The first were Chelsea, AC Milan and Barcelona. Since then there has been no transfer window without any offer or interest.

“It is not all clubs known by the press. Christian is not a guy who wants to talk too much. He talks with his feet.”

Source | BT

Eriksen said back in January that he was happy at Spurs and there has been speculation he will be offered a new deal - his current contract runs until 2020.

While there’s no indication he wants to leave Spurs, until he signs on the dotted line, there is the possibility he could be tempted away. However, Spurs have shown in the past they can be tough negotiatiors.

Dembélé Was Given Support from Teammates and the Camp Nou Crowd

Ivan Rakitić and Gerard Piqué applauded the youngster

Ousmane Dembélé has had trouble hitting the ground running after coming over from Borussia Dortmund to FC Barcelona for a mouth-watering sum.

The 20-year-old winger has been affected by injuries and adaptation issues, but he seems back on the right track after notching an assist in Barça’s 6-1 triumph over Girona.

His teammates are clearly trying to get him comfortable in the team, as the winger could prove very important in Barcelona’s quest for another treble.

Two influential, veteran players were seen applauding him as the French international took a shot. The crowd also chanted encouragement specifically for him.

Notably also, Luis Suárez went straight to Dembélé after the Uruguayan turned in a pass from the Frenchman into the net. Dembélé didn’t expect it at first, turning and running back to his half for the re-start, but he heard Suárez chasing him down and turned around to hug his teammate.

The Uruguayan also gave advice to Dembélé as well as fellow newcomer Philippe Coutinho, instructing them in the Barcelona way:

Valverde will have to shuffle his defence against Las Palmas

Barcelona head to Las Palmas on Thursday night in La Liga and Ernesto Valverde will have to shuffle his defence due to injury and suspension.

Jordi Alba will get the night off due to suspension after he picked up his fifth booking of the season late on in the win over Girona. That should mean another start for Lucas Digne at full-back.

On the other flank Nelson Semedo is out after he picked up a hamstring injury that will sideline him for five weeks, so expect Sergi Roberto to return to the starting line-up.

In central defence Gerard Pique has been struggling with a knee injury and surely needs to sit this one out. Valverde will probably bring in Thomas Vermaelen to partner Samuel Umtiti, although Yerry Mina is also an option.

It will still be a pretty strong defence with Roberto, Vermaelen, Umtiti and Digne but if any of the defenders were to pick up an injury in training, Barca would be a bit short.

Rumors: PSG to offer Mbappe plus cash for Coutinho plus Karamoh and Adli

PSG to offer Mbappe plush cash for Coutinho

All they want in return is Coutinho, because he’s Neymar’s best friend in football and will ensure their star man is happy and will stay in France.

Why Valverde must give Dembélé and Coutinho more playing time

الأحد، 25 فبراير 2018

Griezmann and Atleti serve up warning for Barca

Atletico Madrid sent a warning to Barcelona on Sunday night as they crushed Sevilla 5-2 at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.

Antoine Griezmann bagged a hat-trick and Diego Costa and Koke also scored in what is Atletico’s best performance for some time. Sevilla grabbed two goals back late on, but make no mistake this was a real thrashing by Diego Simeone’s side.

Atletico remain seven points behind Barcelona but the two teams clash on Camp Nou next Sunday and, provided the gap remains the same after the midweek round of fixtures, Atletico could cut the gap to four points with a win.

Before then Barcelona head to Las Palmas on Thursday night, while Atletico host Leganes at the Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday.

Both teams will be expected to take maximum points from those games, which would set up Sunday’s game really nicely.

Atletico are on a really good run of seven straight wins in all competitions. They also haven’t lose in La Liga since going down 1-0 at Espanyol just before Christmas.

The return of Costa has been a big boost and he has five goals and an assist already, as well as two yellows and a red card.

Griezmann also appears to be finding his best form at exactly the right time. The Frenchman, who continues to be linked with a move to Barcelona, has eight goals and three assists in his last eight games.

Defensively they are also hugely impressive. They have the best record in La Liga, having conceded just 11 goals in 25 games.

Barcelona still have a healthy lead, and are unbeaten, but will know that Atletico are still there and ready to take advantage of any slip-ups.

The game between the two on Sunday will have a bearing on the title race and is one Atletico will surely have to win if they are to have any chance of pipping Barca to the title.

Rafinha confirms he does not want Barca return

Rafinha has said he wants to stay at Inter Milan and does not want to return to Barcelona when his loan spell ends at the end of the season.

The Brazilian swapped Camp Nou for San Siro in January and his temporary deal includes an option for Inter to purchase the Brazilian for €38 million.

Rafinha has made a bright start to life in Serie A and says he wants to stay, but his future depends on whether Inter want to keep him.

“Of course, that’s what I want. I did not come here thinking that I will recover my form and go back to Barcelona,” he said. ”I want to stay here, then all else will depend on Inter.

”I feel good, I’m finding the right rhythm, I’m happy with my condition and I’m adapting.

”I would say that every player wants to start matches from the beginning, but between the physical recovery and the need to understand a new style of football I think the approach was the best.

”It’s better, some pains are quite normal after months of inactivity, but everything is going in the right direction, I feel close to the top.”

Source | Gazzetta dello Sport

Rafinha made his first start for Inter on Saturday during the 2-0 win over Benevento and drew praise from coach Luciano Spalletti

“I am very satisfied with Rafinha, as I didn’t expect him to do that well for that length of time. He kept asking to stay on for another five minutes, but he chased everything down and went into the tackle. He did great.”

The win saw Inter move into third place in the table, but they have played a game more than Roma and Lazio.

A big win and the scores are in.

Marc-André ter Stegen

Was caught out for Girona’s goal when he burst off his line but did not make a good challenge and subsequently left an empty net. Other than that, he was very good.

You say: 8

Sam says: 7

Nelson Semedo

Did not offer a lot in terms of attacking and seemed hesitant to get forward at times but was good defensively. Has reportedly picked up an injury that will keep him out for five weeks.

You say: 8

Sam says: 7

Samuel Umtiti

Was at fault for the Girona goals he wasn't quick enough to react. Did not really have a lot to deal with after that.

You say: 7

Sam says: 6

Gerard Piqué

Not much he could have done for Girona’s goal and after that the away side offered very little in terms of attack making it a relatively straightforward game for Piqué.

You say: 7

Sam says: 7

Jordi Alba

With the width provided by Dembélé and Coutinho, Alba did not need to get forward as much as possible and so was not involved a lot in the attacking department. Defensively, he made one tackle, one interception and four clearances.

You say: 7

Sam says: 7

Sergio Busquets

Was constantly an outlet for the defence and helped get the ball forward as much as possible, a typically Busquets performance. Substituted in the 68th minute.

You say: 8

Sam says: 8

Phillipe Coutinho

Coutinho’s best pefroamnce in a Barça shirt to date. He was creative, dangerous and improitnalty on the same wavelength as Messi and Suárez.

You say: 9

Sam says: 9

Ivan Rakitić

Rakitić’s main job was to just get the ball to the front three as much as possible and he did this week.

You say: 8

Sam says: 7

Ousmane Dembélé

Looked very dangersous and wasted afraid to shoot. However this did on occasion come to him not choosing the correct option and wasting some chances.

You say: 8

Sam says: 8

Luis Suárez

Ruthlessly efficient from Suárez. Scoring a from four shots on target is an impressive conversion rate and he also managed to assist one as well.

You say: 10

Sam says: 10

Lionel Messi

Not much more you can say than he was outstanding, paricualry in the first half. He created chance after chance and seemingly every touch he had hurt Girona.

You say: 10

Sam says: 10

Thomas Vermaelen

Played around a half hour but did not have to break much of a sweat.

You say: 7

Sam says: 7

Paulinho

Played 22 minutes but struggled to get involved.

You say: 6

Sam says: 6

Sergi Roberto

Only played fifteen minutes but looked good.

You say: 7

Sam says: 7

Ernesto Valverde

Won the game early and made subs to rest some legs.

You say: 9

The Team

Dominated Girona from the first minute and bounced back well to recover from a goal down. Very good in an attacking sense.

Injured Semedo out for five weeks

Barcelona have confirmed that defender Nelson Semedo will be out for the next five weeks after injuring a hamstring against Girona.

Semedo started at right-back and was having a fine game until he pulled up late on and hobbled off, leaving Barca to finish the game with 10 men having used all their subs.

Semedo’s injury comes at a bad time and means he will miss some pretty important games, including the La Liga clash with Atletico Madrid and the Champions League return leg against Chelsea.

The full-back should be back in action towards the start of April and in the meantime Sergi Roberto should come back in at right-back for Barca.

Valverde: Just when you think you’ve seen everything, Messi surprises you

Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde was full of praise for Lionel Messi after he produced a masterclass in the 6-1 win over Girona at Camp Nou on Saturday.

Messi scored twice and was pretty much unplayable as Barcelona extended their lead at the top of the table to 10 points.

It’s fair to say that Valverde was impressed with his skipper’s performance.

“Leo makes things appear easy, but they aren’t easy. It’s hard to judge a performance like this,” he said.

”Just when you think you’ve seen everything from a player, he goes and surprises you once more. We are always waiting to see just how he will raise the bar next.”

Messi now has 22 goals and 12 assists in 25 La Liga outings this season and Girona, like so many teams before them, simply had no answer to the brilliant Argentine.

Barcelona set new club record with win over Girona

Barcelona set a new club record on Saturday as they won 6-1 against Girona to ensure they have now gone 32 games unbeaten in the league.

Luis Suarez scored a hat-trick, Lionel Messi got two and Philippe Coutinho curled home a cracking goal on a brilliant night for the club.

The win means that they are on the second best run La Liga has ever seen. Yet they still have some way to go to beat the record held by Real Sociedad.

Barcelona will have to remain unbeaten in their next six games (against Las Palmas, Atletico Madrid, Malaga, Athletic Bilbao, Sevilla and Leganes) to equal the record. Can they do it?

Nelson Semedo forced off with injury against Girona

Barcelona right-back Nelson Semedo was forced off with injury at the end of the 6-1 win over Girona at Camp Nou on Saturday.

Ernesto Valverde restored Semedo to his starting line-up, with Sergi Roberto given a breather and starting on the bench.

The Barca boss was rewarded with a really strong performance from Semedo, until he pulled up late on with what looked like a hamstring problem.

Semedo couldn’t continue and hobbled off leaving Barca to finish the game with 10 men as Valverde had already used all three substitutes.

We’ll have to wait and see how serious the problem is, but hopefully Semedo will not be sidelined for too long.

Gerard Pique’s fitness is also of some concern. The defender played with a knee strapping and was replaced by Thomas Vermaelen in the second half after taking a knock.

Barcelona are back in action on Thursday as they head to struggling Las Palmas.

WATCH: Messi score against 36 La Liga teams

Lionel Messi was in sensational form on Saturday as Barcelona cruised to victory over Girona at Camp Nou.

Girona actually took the lead but Barcelona came roaring back with Luis Suarez grabbing a hat-trick and Messi scoring twice.

Messi’s goals mean he has now scored against more La Liga teams than any other player in La Liga history, and you can check out the goals below.

It was a superb performance from Barcelona who also saw Philippe Coutinho curl home a beautiful goal, his first in La Liga for his new club.

The only sour notes on a great night were concerns over the fitness of both Gerard Pique and Nelson Semedo.

Barça 6-1 Girona: Destruction

WHAT A PERFORMANCE!!!

Barcelona continued their unbeaten run in what looks like an unstoppable march to the title thanks to a fantastic 6-1 win over Girona at the Camp Nou. The Blaugrana conceded after just 3 minutes but had a spectacular performance after that, scoring some beautiful goals and play the best football we’ve seen all season from the leaders.

FIRST HALF

The game started with a horrible mistake from the Barça defense and a goal from Portu after just two minutes, and it looked like a long night was ahead. But Luis Suárez equalized just a couple of minutes later, and that started a simply spectacular first half performance from the hosts.

With Philippe Coutinho, Lionel Messi and Ousmane Dembélé wreaking havoc in the Girona defense with their pace, skill and passing, the Blaugrana created chance after chance against a desperate defense that kept scrambling to block shots and stop the ball from hitting the back of the net.

But the pressure was just too big, and in the final 15 minutes Barça found the goals to turn this into a big win: Lionel Messi scored twice, including a gorgeous free kick under the wall, and Coutinho gave Suárez a tap-in just before halftime to put the leaders up 4-1.

At halftime, a sensational game from the Blaugrana gave them a great lead. Could they score more goals in the second to make the win even better?

SECOND HALF

The show continued in the second half, and Barça completed their best performance of the season with a couple more goals: first, Philippe Coutinho scored his first in La Liga with a trademark Coutinho strike from outside the box into the top corner, then Suárez made it 6-1 and completed his hat-trick. There could have been more goals, but a few poor efforts and some good saves kept the score from being even bigger.

The final whistle came, and the Camp Nou was treated to a fantastic night. This was the Barça we fell in love with, and the Messi-Suárez-Coutinho-Dembélé quartet looks like it could be a devastating group of superstars. This team looked amazing tonight, and let’s hope for more of this in the final months of the season.

The only piece of bad news: Nélson Semedo has a hamstring injury and could be out for a while on the night where he looked like a million bucks. What a shame.

Barcelona: Ter Stegen; Semedo, Piqué (Vermaelen), Umtiti, Alba; Rakitic (Roberto), Busquets (Paulinho); Dembélé, Messi, Coutinho; Suárez

Goals: Suárez (5’, 44’, 76’), Messi (30’, 36’), Coutinho (66’)

Girona: Bounou; Ramalho, Bernardo, Juanpe; Maffeo, Pons, Granell, Aday (Planas); Portu (Douglas), Lozano, Borja García (Aleix García)

Goal: Portu (3’)

Messi sets new La Liga record for assists

Lionel Messi has set yet another record after setting up Luis Suarez for Barcelona’s equaliser against Girona on Saturday.

The hosts were stunned at Camp Nou as Girona took the lead inside three minutes. Some poor defending from Samuel Umtiti allowed Portu to clip home the opener.

Fortunately the lead did not last long as Messi released Luis Suarez who fired home clinically from inside the box.

The assist was yet another record for Messi’s ever-growing collection.

It’s also Messi’s 12th assist in La Liga this season, while Suarez’s goal was his 18th in the league, only Messi has scored more than the Uruguayan.

How to watch Barça vs Girona

Two very good Catalan teams face off at Camp Nou, and you cannot miss it

Are you ready for a really fun night of La Liga action featuring the two best Catalan teams in the first division? You got it! There’s no Espanyol in this game and Barcelona will be facing a team that actually wants to play football!

The league leaders welcome Girona to Camp Nou on Saturday night and this really promises to be a great watch. Despite a very bad performance away to Chelsea in the Champions League, Barça have played some great football for most of 2018 and will be looking to rebound from that night at Stamford Bridge with a strong win here.

But it won’t be easy: Girona are eighth in the table and are having a dream debut season in the league, and they’re one of the most exciting teams to watch. They attack anyone, anywhere, and they recently beat Real Madrid and held Atlético Madrid to just one point. If they can do damage to the other two title contenders, they can definitely cause Barça some problems.

Lionel Messi scored his first goal against Chelsea and will be looking to continue his hot streak against Girona. This really will be fun, I promise. Don’t miss it.

Barça trying to help Dembele complete his complex landing
Two muscle injuries have hampered Ousmane Dembele's integration at Barcelona, a young star that landed at the massive Catalan club with hardly 18 months as a professional. In that time, a lot has happened: became a professional, success at Rennes, transfer to Borussia Dortmund, France call-up, transfer to Barcelona and the operation on his ruptured tendon. It's a lot to manage for a player who, at that time, was the second most expensive player in the world, after Neymar.

After a very good result and a very bad performance away to Chelsea in the Champions League, Barcelona are back in La Liga action with a home match against fellow Catalan rivals Girona. The Blaugrana will be playing in front of the home fans and will be looking to perform better this time, and they should have a reason to up their game.

And that reason is Girona: the newly promoted side have had a dream season so far, playing great football and scoring lots of goals. Having some really fantastic young players on loan from Manchester City certainly helps, but manager Pablo Machín has done a wondeful job of making all these young pieces work together. They beat Real Madrid and drew with Atlético Madrid over the last few months, so they’ve proven their worth against the top teams.

Barça beat them 3-0 in their first meeting this season, but that was a really tough match and the scoreline doesn’t tell the whole story. Expect another tough night on Saturday, with Girona not afraid to attack the leaders at Camp Nou. This should be fun.

POSSIBLE LINEUPS

Barcelona (4-4-2): Ter Stegen; Semedo, Piqué, Umtiti, Alba; Dembélé, Rakitic, Busquets, Coutinho; Messi, Suárez

Girona (3-4-3): Bono; Ramalho, Bernardo, Juanpe; Benítez, Pere Pons, Granell, Mojica; Portu, Stuani, Borja García

PREDICTION

This will be really fun to watch just because of Girona’s style of play at home or away, and Barça will rebound for the bad performance at Stamford Bridge: 3-1 to the home team.

Ernesto Valverde talks Pique, fatigue, Arthur and Atletico Madrid ahead of Girona clash

Ernesto Valverde met the press again today for his pre-match press conference and seemed to be in a pretty good mood.

The Barcelona boss was pleased with his side’s display against Chelsea, talked a little bit about resting players but didn’t give too much away about tomorrow’s team.

Here are the best bits...

Valverde on Gerard Pique

He didn’t train yesterday, but it was a precaution. There are nine points to play for this week so it’s an important week for the league. There are 14 games left to play but three this week so that’s nine points that will say a lot. The best plan is to take things a game at a time, starting with tomorrow. It will be interesting because of the opponent, they are perhaps in their best form of the season. We’ve had a lot of games back to back so it might be a good idea to make changes, but any change will be made with a view to winning the game.

Valverde on Arthur

What’s his surname? I thought you were talking about an actor! He plays for another team. I’ve seen him, but we watch a lot of players.

Valverde on fatigue

We’ve had games at home against Alaves and Getafe which we found very difficult because they played very tight in defence, they stopped us playing our natural game. The cup games we played well home and away. People have all kinds of opinions about the Chelsea game but I thought we played a fantastic game. They hit the post twice and people are saying all kinds of things but the attitude of our team was extraordinary.

I’d love to go to Chelsea and win 5-0, dominate the game, take all our chances but Chelsea are a very good team too. We played in the right spirit, but people are free to have opinions.

Valverde on Sergi Roberto

He’s adapted very well to playing at the back. He’s player who can bring the ball forward. He can play wide, in the middle. He was brought up playing for Barca so he’s mastered positional play and he’s got a very important role. He has huge will, that has a lot to do with it. If you look at his history, he didn’t come straight into the team. He’s had to work his way in to reach a very high level. He’s a blessing.

Valverde on Denis Suarez

I can only play 11 players and have 18 in the squad. It’s a question of him waiting for his chance and making the most of it when it comes.

Valverde on rotation with Atletico coming up

Yes there’s three games to play. But we’re not thinking about Atletico Madrid. We want to go into that game with the same lead as we have now, at least. We need to get through these games and the best way to do this is not to think about Atletico. The points against Atletico are the same as against Girona and Las Palmas.

Just how good are Valverde’s Barca?

Barcelona are having a pretty incredible season it has to be said. The team are seven points clear in La Liga and still to taste defeat, into the Copa del Rey final and looking good in the Champions League.

Yet there’s still a real doubt about just how good the team is, particularly in comparison to some of the legendary teams of the past.

Barcelona have not been setting the word alight with the amazing, free-flowing football of old, which has drawn plenty of criticism, despite their brilliant record this season.

Tuesday’s Champions League draw with Chelsea was a case in point. Barca struggled to break down a compact and organised Chelsea defence and weren’t at their best. Yet they still dominated possession for long spells, grabbed an away goal and head into the secong leg with the tie just about turned in their favour.

It wasn’t a great performance, but it’s a great result and that’s pretty much what this season has been about. Fortunately that’s also how success is measured in football.

Yet despite their results Guillem Balague reckons this is the worst Barcelona team in a decade. Here’s what he thinks of the current league leaders.

“Have a look at the calendar and it was 10 years ago that Pep Guardiola arrived. Since then the standards have been very high and this is a Barcelona side that still depends too much on Messi and also Iniesta, who struggles with 90 minute performances in every game, which is why Ernesto Valverde chooses when he plays.

“It has to be a particular type of game that Barcelona controls to see the best Iniesta and when that doesn’t happen Barca lose control. Of course they want Coutinho and Arthur and Dembele to improve the team, but right now, the Barcelona against Chelsea was frustrating and, having set their standard so high, was the worst of the last decade.

“Not only have they seen the difficulties and lack of quality throughout the squad, they are acting upon it and want to get rid of eight players. That suggests they agree with me and this is the worst Barcelona of the last decade.”

Source | Sky Sports

Standards are very high at Barcelona and that is something Valverde will be well aware of, but he can also only work with the players he has available and the squad is clearly not as strong as in years past.

Yet for all the criticism the team has received this season, and although it’s still a dream at this point, Valverde could yet end the season with the treble.

So just how good is this team? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
