The midfielder admits he’s had a tough time

Sergio Busquets was pretty emotional after making his first appearance at Euro 2020 on Wednesday and captaining Spain to an emphatic 5-0 win over Slovakia.

Luis Enrique’s side had drawn their opening two games but booked their place in the last 16 with a big win that will boost confidence ahead of the knockout stages.

Busquets, who missed the opening two games after testing positive for Covid-19, spoke after the match and admitted he’s had a tough couple of weeks.

“I’m emotional. I had a bad time, a lot of days at home,” he said, “I didn’t know if I could come back or not. But the group is strong... All this has made us grow.

“It wasn’t easy because you’re waiting for a negative PCR test. I’ve had teammates who’ve had one after 20-plus days. I wanted to play in this Euros, it will be the last one for me, for sure.

“This is the way we want to continue performing. It’s going to bring confidence and morale. Now we have to play the World Cup runners-up. Hopefully we play at this level to get one step closer to our objective.”

The 32-year-old certainly impressed on his return to the side and was named man of the match. Spain now go on to play Croatia in the last 16 with the game due to take place on Monday in Denmark.
