Spain disappoint in second half, draw against Poland

Two points from two games for Luis Enrique’s men

Spain’s slow start to Euro 2020 continued on Saturday as Luis Enrique’s men drew their second straight match after being held to a 1-1 draw against Poland in front of the home crowd in Seville. Jordi Alba and Pedri played all 90 minutes in the game.

It was a strong start for La Roja who dominated possession to begin the game and pressed high up the pitch, with Poland struggling to get out of their own half and leaving Robert Lewandowski isolated up front. Gerard Moreno was the fresh name in Spain’s XI and he had a major contribution in the first goal, firing a low shot/assist that Morata sent to the back of the net.

Poland improved after conceding and began creating chances on the counter, and Lewandowski had a big opportunity to equalize right before halftime but was stopped by Unai Simón.

But the visitors didn’t give up and scored right away in the second half, with Lewandowski dominating Laporte in the air and heading home a great cross by Jozwiak.

Spain had a chance to respond right away when Moder fouled Gerard Moreno inside the box, but the Villarreal striker fired his penalty against the post — and Morata missed a sitter on the rebound.

Poland’s goal followed by the missed penalty cleared affected Spain’s confidence, and they couldn’t put together any meaningful offense in the final half-hour despite Luis Enrique’s substitutions. The final whistle came, and Spain are yet to win in Euro 2020.

The result isn’t a disaster as La Roja can still win the group in the final match and will qualify with a victory over Slovakia, but they don’t look even close to contenders for the trophy right now.
