The Argentine tried his best to make his team-mate stay
The lengths to which Lionel Messi went to try to keep Neymar at Barcelona have been reported by Sport with claims the Argentine was willing to help the Brazilian become the best player in the world.
Messi’s attitude towards putting others first is not a new one. It’s a common notion that the Barca talisman always put Suárez and Neymar first on the pitch, often for the better of the team and the happiness of his star team-mates.
In fact this is something that we have observed playing out on the pitch game after game. There wasn’t a a shred of selfishness that Messi displayed when it came to his relationship with Neymar on the pitch.
Neymar is obviously gone, but what is fascinating is that Messi really knew that the Brazilian wanted to be the best player in the world and reportedly told his team-mate he would give him what he wanted.
“What do you want? You want to be the Ballon d’Or? I’ll make you Ballon d’Or.”

If there is anything to take away from this report, it’s simply good to have it reiterated that Messi isn’t selfish on or off the pitch when it comes to being the “best” player at Barcelona - yet another factor that keeps him head and shoulders above the rest.
