Where are the ‘big names’ Bartomeu?

The transfer window is fast fizzling out

As the close of the transfer window looms into view, the rumors surrounding Barcelona and their potential targets are pretty much grinding to a halt.

Even Sport appear to be giving up hope, having insisted all summer that Philippe Coutinho might arrive, tonight they have been forced to admit that actually, Barcelona might not sign anyone.

Rewind just a month and Josep Maria Bartomeu promised “big name signings” he also vowed to renew Andres Iniesta, but that’s another matter entirely.

Of course Nelson Semedo, Paulinho and Ousmane Dembele have arrived, but none really fit the big-name category, at least not yet.

Just a few days ago Robert Fernandez also got in on the act, saying he hoped to bring one or maybe two new players before the close of the window.

Yet with a little over 24 hours left until the window closes, the options are rapidly running out.

Riyad Mahrez popped up as a potential candidate this morning, before seemingly disappearing off the face of the planet. However, multiple reports have subsequently claimed Barca have no interest whatsoever in the Leicester City star.

Whether that will change if Mahrez is still a Leicester player when the Premier League window closes, and if Barca fail to sign Coutinho, remains to be seen.

Speaking of Coutinho, he appears no closer to a move, transfer request or no, it seems Liverpool’s stance he will not be sold is simply immovable, at least in this window.

There have been other reports today too, that Barca failed with a huge bid for Paulo Dybala earlier this summer, and also rejected the chance to move for Kylian Mbappe.

Fernandez has previously ruled out a move for Jean Michael Seri, which just about leaves Angel Di Maria as perhaps the most likely arrival before the end of the deadline.

A big name perhaps, but not quite what we were expecting.
