Spanish Supercup moves to a “Final Four” format, possibly in Saudi Arabia

The Spanish federation has already approved changes

The Spanish football federation has approved a change in the format to the Spanish Supercup starting next season, moving to a four-team format in January.

Previously, the Supercup pitted the winners of La Liga against the winners of the Copa del Rey in a two-legged affair, home and away. This season, it was a single match played in Morocco.

Now, four teams will qualify, the winners and runners-up to La Liga and the cup. As things stand, that means Barcelona will qualify as La Liga champions, Atlético Madrid as league runners-up, and Valencia as either winners or runners-up of the cup. The fourth spot will likely go to Real Madrid, who are third in the league, since Barça are the other cup finalists.

Federation president Luis Rubiales has admitted that hosting the tournament in Saudi Arabia is a real possibility, but denies that an agreement has been reached. However, changing the timing of the competition from August to January suggests Saudi Arabia as a host is definitely on the table, given that it might have been chosen to time with colder temperatures in the area.

Changes to the Copa del Rey are also being considered, specifically, having each round until the semis be a single match, rather than a two-legged tie.
