After months of speculation about who will have the honor of gracing the front of the historic FC Barcelona shirt it has now finally been decided. While there was talk about Barcelona going one season without a main sponsor it has now been agreed that the club will extend their current agreement with Qatar Airways.
The two sides were close to an extension prior to last season, but Josep Maria Bartomeu pulled the plug on the deal, hoping to secure a larger sum. His plan did not work as the new one-year extension with QA is reportedly on the same terms it was when the two sides first reached an agreement, rumored to be around €40 million. Bartomeu was reportedly waiting out for a €65 million offer, but with no leverage the Barcelona president settled for the old deal.
After Japanese-based retailer Rakuten opted out to be the new shirt sponsor, the only remaining option for Barcelona remained American ecommerce company, Amazon, and one of the fastest growing airlines in the world, Qatar Airways. The only problem preventing Barcelona from initiating a bidding war was the fact that Amazon could only enter an agreement starting with the 2017-18 season. But the fact the Amazon and Barcelona have been negotiating for some time and that the new QA deal last only one year could mean that Amazon will be the new shirt sponsor after this season.
