Fernando Torres made almost all headlines in Atlético Madrid's Champions League game against Barcelona last week, for good and bad reasons. And the bad reasons still make him angry.
The striker spoke to radio Cadena SER about the red card he was shown just a few minutes after scoring at Camp Nou in the first leg of the quarterfinals. After a bad foul on Neymar Jr., he was booked again for a challenge on Sergio Busquets, a controversial call by referee Felix Brych that had a big effect on the outcome of the game.
Torres has not forgotten about that key moment yet, and he doesn't agree with the decision made. The striker also believes the Colchoneros could have won had they stayed with eleven men on the pitch, and is hurting about not playing the return leg at Vicente Calderón.
"I already doubted it on the pitch, but seeing on the television confirmed my opinion. I'm convinced than can never be a red card, ever. It wasn't a cynical challenge or a bad tackle, it was barely a foul. I feel impotent.
"I saw that Busquets lost a bit of control of the ball, and I felt it was a good opportunity to steal the ball and maybe score a second goal. The will to recover the ball created this whole problem.
"There is a lot of different opinions about my sending off. I hear the argument that it was a bookable offense, but if watch the tape, I never swing my leg towards him. Although I assume I could have avoided that foul, it was only because I wanted to win so badly. I should have seen the way the referee was managing the game. Details like that change everything.
"If we had eleven men, we would have definitely beaten Barça. The team was in great shape, well organized, ready to win. That sending off was a very bad moment, the worst in my career. Barça is the best team in the world and the worst possible rival to face."
