UEFA appoint referee for Champions League semifinal between Atlético Madrid and Bayern Munich

We officially have a whistle-blower for the big Champions League match in the Spanish capital.

UEFA has appointed English referee Mark Clattenburg to officiate the European Cup semifinal first leg between Atlético Madrid and Bayern Munich, which will take place at the Vicente Calderón Stadium on Wednesday night. This will be Clattenburg's sixth UCL assignment in the 2015/16 season.

The 41-year-old is one of the Premier League's best referees. A FIFA official since 2006, Clattenburg has regularly been assigned to big European matches involving national teams and clubs. His only assignment in a Final was the 2014 UEFA Super Cup between Real Madrid and Sevilla, but he has been appointed for several knockout matches over the past few years. Clattenburg is a strong referee who is not afraid of booking players, having handed out over a dozen red cards and hundreds of yellows during his career outside of the Premier League.

Both teams playing on Wednesday have been involved with the Englishman in the past, and his track record is quite interesting: Atlético Madrid have won only one of six European games officiated by Clattenburg, while Bayern have been victorious in all three continental matches with him blowing the whistle.

So the takeaway from Clattenburg's assignment is: there will be a lot of cards, and Bayern are probably going to win.
