FC Barcelona 3-1 Arsenal FC, 2016 Champions League: Player Ratings

A detailed, player-by-player breakdown of Barcelona's win against Arsenal the Champions League.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen
8.2
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 38
Passes: 33
Pass Accuracy: 88%
Shots Faced: 3
Saves Made: 2
Clearances: 1

Bostjan says: 8.5

Even though Arsenal were constantly buzzing around the Barcelona penalty area, ter Stegen wasn’t tested a whole lot until the second half. He can’t be blamed for the only goal Barcelona allowed, but the young German was brilliant in closing stages, making a fantastic double save, first on Alexis Sanchez and then on Olivier Giroud.

Dani Alves

Turnovers: 0
Tackles: 3
Shots/Shots on Target: 0/0

Aerial Duels Won: 0
Interceptions: 3

Bostjan says: 7.5

Didn’t quite look himself offensively, often looking lackadaisical, but he made people forget about that with a perfect cross to Suarez for Barcelona’s second goal of the game. Defensively the Brazilian had a solid game, not making any excellent plays but not making any noteworthy mistakes either.

Javier Mascherano 8.2
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 65
Passes: 50
Pass Accuracy: 92%
Tackles: 2
Interceptions: 5
Clearances: 4
Aerial Duels Won: 0
Successful Dribbles: 2

Bostjan says: 9.0

Many were worried how Barcelona’s defense would look without Gerard Pique anchoring it, but El Jefecito quickly put those worries to rest. While he did allow Mesut Ozil on one occasion to easily get past his for a good scoring change, Mascherano had an excellent game, effectively shutting Danny Welbeck out of the game completely. His diving block on the aforementioned player midway through the second half was a thing of beauty and was the pinnacle on a night filled with excellent plays.

Jeremy Mathieu
6.8
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 70
Passes: 57
Pass Accuracy: 95%
Tackles: 1
Interceptions: 0
Clearances: 6
Aerial Duels Won: 0
Shots/Shots on Target: 1/0

Bostjan says: 7.5

Mathieu won out over Thomas Vermaelen and Marc Bartra for the start in Pique’s place and overall the Frenchman had a good game, especially in the first half which was highlighted by a diving block on Mohamed Elneny late in the half. The second half wasn’t as strong as the first and his two mistakes in a short span midway through the half could’ve costed Barcelona dearly on a different night.

Jordi Alba
7.5
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 88
Passes: 73
Pass Accuracy: 88%
Shots/Shots on Target: 0/0
Tackles: 3
Interceptions: 0
Clearances: 3
Key Passes: 2
Successful Dribbles: 3

Bostjan says: 7.0

Defensively Alba wasn’t noticed much, even though he had a few problems performing his defensive duties. On offense the speedy full back had more success, but it was far from a vintage Alba performance. He was an important part of many Barcelona attacks, but all too often his passes in the final third missed the target. But that wasn’t the case midway through the first half when he found Neymar for a scoring chance.

Sergio Busquets
7.2
Minutes played: 90
Touches:96
Passes: 88
Pass Accuracy: 96%
Shots/Shots on Target: 1/0
Tackles: 2
Interceptions: 1
Clearances: 1
Turnovers: 0
Aerial Duels Won: 1
Key Passes: 1
Fouls Won: 1

Sam says: 7.5

Busquets was heavily involved throughout the match and only Lionel Messi had more touches of the ball than him. With those touches, he successfully found 92% of the time and completed over 80 passes. This helped Barcelona dictate and control the play while keeping the Arsenal danger at bay. This was another crucial element to his game as the London side had pace in their side meaning any counterattack had to be stopped quickly. Busquets did this through his interception and tackles.

Ivan Rakitić
7.6
Minutes played: 76
Touches: 71
Passes: 63
Pass Accuracy: 87%
Shots/Shots on Target: 2/0
Turnovers: 0
Key Passes: 0
Fouls Won: 2
Tackles: 1

Sam says: 7.0

A solid performance from Rakitić in which he sat deeper and controlled the play, which in turn gave the front three more freedom. He did manage two shots himself but neither troubled the keeper. He could’ve perhaps done more for Arsenal’s goal as he saw the run of Mohamed Elneny but could not get to him in time. Was subtitled in the 76th minute for Arda Turan.

Andres Iniesta
7.9
Minutes played: 71
Touches: 78
Passes: 70
Pass Accuracy: 96%
Shots/Shots on Target: 1/0
Fouls Won: 3
Turnovers: 1
Successful Dribbles: 3
Key Passes: 1
Interceptions: 2

Sam says: 7.5

Against a team that likes to keep the ball, Iniesta gave a masterclass of how to move it effectively and accurately. He completed 70 passes with an accuracy of 96%, the best success rate of any player on the pitch and linked well with the front three. He would routinely drop deeper to allow Barça a way out of defence and his defensive work was also very strong with two interceptions.

Lionel Messi
8.7
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 105
Passes: 83
Pass Accuracy: 88%
Shots/Shots on Target: 6/3
Turnovers: 4
Successful Dribbles: 6
Key Passes: 2
Fouls Won: 1
Interceptions: 1

Kevin says: 8.0

So confusing pulling a rating out for this one. Lio harried the Arsenal defence to win the ball and lead to the first goal and then sublimely dinked over Ospina to put a gloss on the scoreline in the final moments. Both of these moves were typical of a genius for whom there are no longer really any superlatives left. However, watching the game and particularly in the second half, I didn't really feel it was Messi`s night. On a few occasions his passes were well off and he did not show the hunger to win the ball back afterwards. Also he was dispossessed in situations where he rarely, if ever, allows that to happen. I can`t believe I`m complaining at all about someone who scored 3 goals across the two legs and did produce his moments in the match. Despite all of my whinging, he made a big difference to the game.

Luis Suarez

Fouls Won: 0

At times he looked to be the only one up front continuously haranguing an Arsenal team that played much better than expected. Lovely pass to set Neymar through for the opener and his finish for the second was something you`ll tell the grandkids about. The guy is flying.

Neymar 8.9
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 89
Passes: 63
Pass Accuracy: 88%
Shots/Shots on Target: 3/3
Successful Dribbles: 4
Key Passes: 6
Fouls Won: 3
Turnovers: 6
Tackles: 2

Kevin says: 8.0

Seems to love the angle that allows him open his body and slot into the far post as again he pulled out a lovely finish one on one with the keeper. Great to see him back and scoring in the CL as he was vital and we`ll need that against Atleti.

Sergi Roberto
7.2
Minutes played: 19
Touches: 15
Passes: 11
Pass Accuracy: 91%
Tackles: 2

Kevin says: 6.5

Brought on in the 72nd in place of Iniesta he was really the perfect substitute at that time when the team had regained domination of the game but were still looking a little jaded at times. He's gaining an uncanny ability for aggressively winning possession in defensive positions and then appearing at the other end of the pitch in offensive areas. Long may it last.

Arda Turan
6.8
Minutes played: 14
Touches: 22
Passes: 21
Pass Accuracy: 95%
Fouls: 1

Kevin says: 6.5

Turan entered with 14 to play and is starting to look like he's caught up with the pace of the team. Got himself stupidly booked in a situation where he made a foul about 15 yards away when he shouldn't have but was a solid performer otherwise.

The Team 8.4
Passes: 753
Pass Accuracy: 89%
Shots/Shots on Target: 17/8
Tackles: 17
Aerial Battles Won: 50%
Fouls Won/Committed: 11/8

Kevin says: 8.0
Barça were in funny form. At times they looked to be playing on autopilot and seemed happy to let Arsenal take the initiative. Then when it really mattered they were able to turn it up a gear and look absolutely scintillating. Whether it was getting a vital second goal on the counter when Arsenal were coming on strong or playing keep ball to tire the opponents out in the final 15, they were sensational but only when they needed to be. There were shaky moments at the back for sure but Jeremy Mathieu cemented his place as third choice centre half right now with a decent performance. As a Bartra fan, that's tough to admit. The unsung heroes for me were Rakitic and Busquets who did their defensive duties so well and were decisive in possession. The lads played in fits and starts but that was quite simply more than enough to carry them through to the next round. More consistency will need to be shown against Atleti for sure.
Luis Enrique
8.4

Kevin says: 8.0

The only big decision the manager faced tonight was who would partner Mascherano and Mathieu got the nod. There's no doubting the fact that Arsenal really dragged his team in all directions at times, the manager looked seriously animated trying to motivate a team that looked sensational at times but also spent periods on autopilot. The streak rolls on, we go through 5-1 on aggregate. Difficult to be in any way critical of Enrique really.

MOTM - Lionel Messi
31%

Bostjan says: Mascherano
Many different players ha strong showings in this one, but once again it was Messi who came out on top. Coming in a close second place was Neymar (25%), and Mascherano completed the podium (15%).
