A frustrating night for Luis Enrique’s side
Spain kicked off their 2020 Euro campaign on Monday with a frustrating 0-0 draw against Sweden in Seville.
Barcelona’s Jordi Alba was captain for the night, with Sergio Busquets out due to Covid-19, while there was also a start for Pedri who wrote his name into the history books.

Spain completely dominated possession in the first half but could not break the deadlock. Koke saw an early header saved and then poked a shot wide midway through the first half.
Yet it was Alvaro Morata who was presented with Spain’s best chance of the half after Marcus Danielsson made a mess of a clipped ball from Alba. The striker was suddenly in on goal but could only place his shot wide of the far post.
Sweden almost made Spain pay five minutes before half-time. Alexander Isak evaded a couple of tackles in the box and fired a shot past Unai Simon. However, the ball hit Llorente, rebounded off the post and back into the grateful arms of the goalkeeper.

Spain weren’t quite as dominant early in the second half and saw Isak cause more chaos on the hour. The Real Sociedad man wriggled his way past three men in the box and crossed for Marcus Berg who somehow managed to miss from close range at the far post.
Luis Enrique responded by sending on Thiago and Pablo Sarabia for Morata and Rodri and then added Gerard Moreno and Mikel Oyarzabal for good measure. Moreno came the closest with a flicked header in the 90th minute that was blocked by goalkeeper Robin Olsen.
It’s a frustrating result for Spain who will feel they did enough to win but simply were not clinical enough in attack. Luis Enrique’s side play again on Saturday against Robert Lewandowski’s Poland who suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat to Slovakia on Monday.
