An update from the club president

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has offered an update on Lionel Messi’s future at the club and remains confident the captain will stay at the Camp Nou

Messi’s contract expires in two weeks and a contract extension is yet to be agreed, but Laporta doesn’t seem too worried about the situation.

Here’s what he’s had to say:

“I would like to say that it is already done, but it is not like that,” he saud.

“The talks are going well, but it is not done. The idea is to reach an agreement as soon as possible. It is convenient for him and also for us because if we solve this matter others would be solved faster.

“We are confident because he wants to stay. We are doing everything possible to offer him a competitive team. We have signed Kun [Aguero] who reminds him every day at the Copa America that he has to sign so they can play together.”

Laporta also added that he is “not contemplating” getting “a no” as an answer from the Argentine who is currently on international duty at the Copa America.

The Barcelona president also went on to talk about transfers and insisted there could be more ins and outs to come.

“We have to follow the rules, we will follow them. There will be more sales and loans. Without paying a transfer fee. We will do a lot of loans, because we have a very high sports payroll compared to other clubs.”

Barca continue to be linked with dozens of players and are expected to complete a move for Memphis Depay shortly. Thoughts may then turn to offloading players to trim the squad and reduce the wage bill.
