Good business from Barca at last as they land Aguero & Garcia

About time...

No sooner has the 2020/21 campaign finished than Joan Laporta is getting busy behind the scenes.

Two days, two signings. What’s more, two free transfers.

Both Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia are good pieces of business by the board, which is more than can be said for a number of buys under the Josep Maria Bartomeu regime.

The Argentinian, as long as he can stay relatively injury free, is a clear upgrade on Martin Braithwaite as a central striker.

Whether the narrative that he’s only been signed to keep Leo Messi happy has any grain of truth to it or not is a side issue, and not one that this column is going to get into.

Why get rid of Luis Suarez only to sign Kun? It wasn’t Laporta who ushered El Pistolero out of the door, yet that decision and many, many others is the mess that the new man in charge is being left to take care of.

Studiously seeking out quality free transfers therefore has to be applauded rather than denigrated.

Aguero will score goals and, frankly, that’s all Barca need him to do. He’s not being employed for his link-up play or anything else.

For two seasons at a reduced salary, it’s a no-brainer. Any associated benefit of having played with Messi at international level is an added bonus.

Garcia, at just 20 years of age, and a player that grew up at La Masia, could anchor the central defence for years to come if he fulfils his early promise.

That Pep Guardiola was more than keen to keep hold of him at Man City tells us an awful lot.

‘He’s not good enough for City so he’s not good enough for us’ is one comment that appeared on social media the other day.

Really? ... REALLY?! People aren’t that stupid surely?!

Comparisons to the likes of Gerard Pique might be a litte premature, but there’s every reason to believe that if Garcia’s development continues as expected, he’ll become just as important to the club as his contemporary has been.

The two signings aren’t expected to be the last of this window for Barca either.

Even if others come in on a free, that has to be seen as positive move by Laporta and his board as they try to address the economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic and the frankly awful mismanagement of the Josep Maria Bartomeu era.
