They believe in him.
Even though he hasn't been a big part of Barcelona's squad since entering the first team, Sergi Roberto is a big part of Barça's future. He has been carefully trained to be the substitute of Xavi Hernández or Andrés Iniesta, because of his ability to play at both sides. Roberto knows the system, has shown potential and just needs to mature to the point of becoming the overwhelming choice for the future.
And Barça are set to show him their confidence. Mundo Deportivo reports that the Blaugrana are set to offer the 22-year-old a contract extension, which will guarantee him at the club at least until 2019 -- his current deal expires in 2016. Roberto will make more money, and the buyout clause will be increased to keep rival teams away.
Before he goes on vacation, Barça sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta wants to get the negotiations as advanced as possible. The talks with Roberto's agent have already started, and Zubi considers the player's extension "a priority", and he wants to travel feeling like the deal will happen once he gets back.
Roberto deserves the trust. He is a good player, and he can develop into a starter soon. But he's patienly waiting for his big opportunity, and he always does his best when called up to play. Zubi is right to have that much of a confidence, and hopefully Sergi gets his chances and makes the most out of it with a new contract.
