Talk about opening the wallet!
Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu said after the disastrous end of last season that the team would go through a huge revolution. Many changes would happen, and they have happened. For that to come to fruition, Barça had to open their wallets. And they sure did that.
According to an extensive study by former Blaugrana marketing director, Esteve Calzada, in a report called Soccerex Transfer Review, Barcelona was the second biggest buyer of this summer's transfer window. Barça has spent a total of €157 million, ranking only behind Manchester United (€196 million). It was the highest ammount ever used by the Catalan club to bring new players to their squad. They also set a record in money spent on goalkeepers. It was a total of €24 million to land Marc-André Ter Stegen and Claudio Bravo.
Barça pretty much broke all of their transfer records during their window. Along with the money spent, the Blaugrana set a club record of €79 million in sales, topped by the transfer of Alexis Sánchez to Arsenal -- €42.5 million. The club also set a new mark in terms of selling a player from La Masia -- Cesc Fàbregas was sold to Chelsea for €33 million.
Obviously, the Catalans were the top buyers in the Spanish League, followed by Real Madrid (€120 million) and Atlético Madrid (€110 million, also a record for the Colchoneros). Speaking of La Liga, the Spanish teams made profit this transfer window. The 20 Liga teams together spent a total of €500 million, while receiving €512 million from foreign clubs. Not much, but still something.
In the end, Barça had to open the wallet to strengthen their squad. And wow, have they done that!
