We’re just a few hours removed from kick-off at the Camp Nou, as two of Spanish football’s biggest clubs prepare to collide in an early season showdown in Catalunya. Ironically, despite being billed as two of Spanish football’s biggest clubs, both FC Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao will be wearing nationalist kits for this afternoon’s clash, backing each region’s claim for independence. Both on and off the pitch, these clubs have an identity; they stand for something and that’s what makes them so special.
However, when the game kicks off in a few hours, all talk of politics and independence will end, replaced by competition. Both Barça and Athletic want to claim these three points and will stop at nothing to achieve that.
For the Blaugrana, this is an opportunity to move further clear of at least one of their main title rivals – Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid contend the Madrid derby later and by definition, at least one of them will falter. A chance to extend an early lead to five points over one club, or perhaps four points over both clubs – that’s not something that will present itself too often.
Maintaining the 100% record, extending their clean sheet record and keeping their momentum will be Barcelona’s main objectives for today’s game – and they have the personnel to meet each one. Luis Enrique will be quietly confident of securing a victory, but what do you think?
