Xavi said no
It was almost a certainty that Xavi Hernández was set to leave Barcelona this summer. He told all of his close friends that it would happen, until he talked with coach Luis Enrique after the World Cup. Once they had a face-to-face conversation, Barça's legendary playmaker decided to accept his new role and stay with his only club until the end of 2016.
When Xavi was set to leave, almost every team with a little bit of money came looking for him. The Premier League was all over him: Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal all reportedly made official offers for the 34-year-old, but he said no to everyone. The reason was simple: he didn't want to leave Barça for an European rival, at the risk of facing the Blaugrana in an important match. He just couldn't do it.
All teams then gave up on Xavi, and the Major League Soccer became the highets favorite league to land him. Well, that's what we thought.
According to a report from Mundo Deportivo, former Barça legend and Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola made an offer to the Catalans to sign Xavi. He reportedly had a personal chat with Xavi to inform him of his intentions. Once again, Hernández said no. Even though they are close friends, Xavi couldn't leave Barcelona to play for one of their biggest rivals.
Xavi would be the second player Guardiola fished out of his former club. Last season, he signed the "new Xavi", Thiago Alcântara, a move that makes Barça fans grimace to this day.
But Xavi remained committed to his club, even when he wanted to leave. He's staying now. Nice try, Pep.
