A detailed, player-by-player breakdown of Barcelona's uneventful La Liga draw with Malaga
Claudio Bravo | 7.1 |
Minutes played: 90 Touches: 22 Passes: 17 Pass Accuracy: 88 % Shots Faced: 2 Saves Made: 2 Clearances: 0 Bostjan says: 7.5 One of the better performers in a game that will hopefully quickly be forgotten, Bravo kept his net untouched for the fifth consecutive appearance. Again the Chilean had to make two saves, none better than the one in the 71st minute when he was able to prevent the bad-angle free kick from crossing the goal-line with the help of the goalpost. Bravo once again looked calm at collecting high crosses sent into the penalty area. |
Douglas Pereira | 4.0 |
Minutes played: 73 Touches: 83 Passes: 56 Pass Accuracy: 89 % Key Passes: 0 Shots/Shots on Target: 0/0 Tackles: 3 Fouls Won: 2 Clearances: 1 Fouls: 2 Interceptions: 3 Bostjan says: 5.0 You know how most of us were going on about how bad Dani Alves has been over the past few weeks? Well, just about all of those performances were better than what Douglas produced on his Barcelona debut. Debuts are never easy, but they should really be better than this, however, it is unfair to fully judge him especially considering that his teammates were also pretty darn bad themselves. But back to Douglas. He often looked clumsy on the ball, some of his outlet passes weren’t even in the same zip code as the intended recipient, his decision making was too slow, and that "tackle" on Luis Alberto that earned him a yellow card was just terrible. That being said, he did make a couple good tackles as well, but all in all it wasn’t a performance to be proud of. |
Gerard Pique | 6.4 |
Minutes played: 90 Touches: 74 Passes: 61 Pass Accuracy: 90 % Tackles: 0 Interceptions: 3 Clearances: 4 Aerial Duels Won: 0 Bostjan says: 7.0 The "tough love" seems to be working on Pique as the center-back once again put in a very solid performance. Like Bartra he too was positionally very sound, making some important plays that helped Barcelona extend their streak of not allowing a goal. Pique, however, was not as consistent as his defensive partner was as he at times rushed clearances and at times struggled under pressure, especially in the second half. Pique also picked up a silly yellow card for his involvement in the Weligton incident late in the game. |
Marc Bartra | 6.3 |
Minutes played: 90 Touches: 88 Passes: 67 Pass Accuracy: 82% Tackles: 4 Interceptions: 5 Clearances: 4 Aerial Duels Won: 4 Fouls: 0 Bostjan says: 7.5 Bartra had a great game in the heart of the Barcelona defense, and was along with Bravo one of Barcelona’s standout players. Bartra was constantly in the perfect position to make the necessary play. As a result of his positioning and anticipation skills he led the team in interceptions and clearances while finishing second in tackles and aerial duels won. Bartra’s strong air game also came into play in the opposing penalty area where the young center-back came close to scoring the opening goal from a corner kick near the one-hour mark. |
Jordi Alba | 6.7 |
Minutes played: 90 Touches: 116 Passes: 75 Pass Accuracy: 85% Shots/Shots on Target: 1/0 Tackles: 5 Interceptions: 2 Clearances: 4 Fouls: 0 Key passes: 3 Bostjan says: 7.5 Alba showed no ill effects after struggling with blisters against Levante, tirelessly making plays all over the Barcelona left side. From the opening minute he was always involved, both on offense and on defense. His pressure on Nordin Amrabat early in the game prevented an easy chance for the Moroccan. Alba worked hard in attack in an attempt to help out in breaking down the defense and twice his crosses created a chance for Messi in the first half, but he will surely want another chance at the second one as had it been five inches closer to Messi, Barcelona would’ve surely been celebrating a win after the final whistle. |
Sergio Busquets | 6.1 |
Minutes played: 90 Touches: 84 Passes: 67 Pass Accuracy: 85% Tackles: 5 Interceptions: 2 Shots/Shots on Target: 0/0 Fouls: 0 Aerial Duels Won: 5 Turnovers: 1 Key passes: 0 Arron says: 6.5 Probably the best of the bunch in midfield, Busquets out-performed Ivan Rakitić and Andrés Iniesta, although this too was probably his worst display of the season. With the rest of the team not really forcing the issue, responsibility should have fallen on Busquets to recycle the ball a little quicker to inspire something extra from his teammates, but he failed to do that and the onus fell on Gerard Piqué instead. However, it was still a solid performance and certainly Busquets can’t be blamed for all of Barça’s offensive woes. |
Andres Iniesta | 5.7 |
Minutes played: 90 Touches: 83 Passes: 62 Pass Accuracy: 89 % Shots/Shots on Target: 0 /0 Turnovers: 3 Key Passes: 0 Successful Dribbles: 3 Tackles: 1 Arron says: 5 .0 I can scarcely remember a match in which Iniesta was so poor. Quite literally, I cannot think of another example which perhaps accentuates the disappointment I’m feeling after this display. His passing was poor as well, but his dribbling was also horrific and led to many a turnover in the middle third. Usually, Iniesta can keep the opposition guessing, but on this night, he was an open book and Malaga had no trouble reading his every move. |
Ivan Rakitić | 5.4 |
Minutes played: 90 Touches: 88 Passes: 71 Pass Accuracy: 93% Shots/Shots on Target: 1/0 Aerial Duels Won: 2 Tackles: 1 Turnovers: 1 Key Passes: 2 Clearances: 1 Arron says: 6 .0 By his high standards, this was a dismal performance from the Croatian midfielder who didn’t look anywhere near his best at any stage at La Rosaleda. His passing was uncharacteristically inaccurate, although he does earn back a point or so with his work ethic. However, when one of your highlights is chasing down a defender in the 87th minute, you probably haven’t done enough in the rest of the game. |
Pedro | 4.4 |
Minutes played: 64 Touches: 33 Passes: 20 Pass Accuracy: 95% Shots/Shots on Target: 2/0 Turnovers: 1 Successful Dribbles: 2 Key Passes: 0 Tackles: 1 Fouls Won: 2 Inder says: 6.0 Fact is, Pedro is no longer a game changer. Still by far the hardest worker out of Barca's front line but that simply is not enough any longer. Neymar's rating was so low because people expect more from him, the same cannot be said of Pedro any more. That said, there were a couple of signs to show how Pedro can contribute more to Barca and that's via link up play. In one move, Messi does well to find Pedro in a bit of space, who in turn slides a neat pass to the overlapping Alba. Nothing came of it,obviously, but let's hope Pedro can work on that aspect of his game more. |
Lionel Messi | 5.5 |
Minutes played: 90 Touches: 49 Passes: 37 Pass Accuracy: 97% Shots/Shots on Target: 2/0 Fouls Won: 0 Successful Dribbles: 4 Key Passes: 1 Turnovers: 1 Tackles: 0 Inder says: 6.0 Messi did all the basics right but simply couldn't find a goal or create one. He had a couple of half chances, especially a cross from the left where Leo attempted to chest the ball towards goal. However, like Luis Enrique said, Malaga did a great job of keeping Messi quiet and prevented the ball from getting to him in dangerous areas of the pitch. It is,however, evident that Messi is currently in great shape, physically and mentally. The burst of acceleration on the ball and the ability to help inject some urgency from midfield was present during the 90 minutes but just not enough of either, in this particular match. |
Neymar | 5.1 |
Minutes played: 64 Touches: 40 Passes: 22 Pass Accuracy: 86 % Shots/Shots on Target: 1/0 Fouls Won: 2 Key Passes: 0 Successful Dribbles: 2 Turnovers: 3 Inder says: 5.5 Tried to get involved but was extremely subdued when you look at his individual contributions. Neymar simply did not link up with the team well enough and was eventually subbed out. I don't think there was a single highlight from Neymar in this game and was probably the worst out of the 3 forwards. |
Sandro Ramirez | 5.8 |
Minutes played: 26 Touches: 15 Passes: 8 Pass Accuracy: 75 % Fouls : 2 Shots/Shots on Target : 1/0 Arron says: 6.5 Probably the brightest offensive performer on the night, although that in itself is no accolade. Sandro worked hard in his stint upfront but even his hard work couldn’t create a chance, even if it might earn his some more game time under Enrique in the coming weeks. |
Munir El Haddadi | 5.0 |
Minutes played: 26 Touches: 6 Passes: 2 Pass Accuracy: 50% Turnovers : 1 Arron says: 5.5 Anonymous, and when he did receive the ball, he was crowded out all too easily by the Malaga defense. One might argue that Neymar suffered the same fate, but at least with the Brazilian there was a chance that he could muster a moment of magic. I hate to say it, but tonight at least, Munir looked out of his depth. |
Adriano Correia | 5.0 |
Minutes played: 17 Touches: 17 Passes: 8 Pass Accuracy: 63 % Arron says: 5.5 Replacing Douglas should be the easiest task in the world; he didn’t look great on his debut after all, so surely Adriano would be an improvement? Unfortunately not; Adriano didn’t look up to speed either and made a few questionable decisions in his limited time on the field. |
The Team | 4.8 |
Passes: 611 Pass Accuracy: 88 % Shots/Shots on Target: 10 /0 Tackles: 21 Aerial Battles Won: 45 % Fouls Won/Committed: 15 /13 Arron says: 5.5 There were positives. The partnership between Bartra and Piqué for example looks impressive and keeps getting better. Even individually, Piqué looked tremendous and his attitude seemed exactly where it should be and needs to be, while Bravo in the Barça goal continues to look every inch a Barça number one. However, there were a lot of negatives too. How much can we attribute down to the pitch? How about the schedule? How much to our own performance? Whatever the issues, Lucho needs to address them before they crop up again. |
Luis Enrique | 5.0 |
Arron says: 5.0 Perhaps like Munir and the rest of the team, Enrique too looked out of his depth at times in this match. His initial selection was odd; Douglas didn’t fit in too well while starting both Pedro and Neymar ensured that we didn’t have many options off the bench. Indeed, his substitutions for the first time were off, both in terms of personnel and timing. I’m willing to chalk it up as a bad day at the office, but as mentioned previously, there are issues that need to be addressed. |
MOTM - Claudio Bravo | 35% |
Bostjan says: Bartra Well, you've been asking for it for some time and the time has come (again) for Messi not to be named Man of the Match. In fact, he wasn't even in the top three. The top honors this time went to Bravo, by some margin actually, with Alba (18%) and Bartra (15%) finishing on the podium. |
