Barcelona B secured their place in Sunday’s promotion playoff final after beating Badajoz on penalties on Thursday in Malaga.

Garcia Pimienta’s side had to come from behind to secure a 1-1 draw and were then flawless in the penalty shootout, captain Monchu netting the winning kick to seal victory.

Barca B had the better of the first half and twice went close with strong efforts on goal.

Konrad de la Fuente saw a fine shot tipped over the crossbar on 19 minutes, while Monchu had a low shot palmed around the post two minutes later.

Yet Barca B went behind just before half-time after being caught out by a quick break. Monchu was dispossessed in midfield, allowing Sergio Maestre to run free and cross for Guzman Casaseca to fire into the roof of the net from close range.

Barca B tried to grab one back before the break. Rey Manaj powered a header straight at the goalkeeper, while Monchu also worked Kike Royo with a free-kick from range.

The captain was then denied by the goalkeeper once more on the stroke of half-time, this time with a whipped effort from just outside the penalty area.

Barca B continued to attack after the break and hit the woodwork early in the second half through Sergio Akieme after more good work from Konrad.

Garcia Pimienta made a double change halfway through the second half, sending on Nils Mortimer and Matheus Pereira for Ilaix Moriba and Ludovit Reis.

Barcelona kept pressing and finally got the equaliser they deserved with just seven minutes of normal time remaining. Konrad did well on the left to cross for Manaj to head home.

A goalless period of extra-time followed but Barca B were not to be denied in the shoot-out, Inaki Pena making a crucial save and the team scoring all five of their kicks.
