Barcelona vs Deportivo, 2017 La Liga: Final Score 4-0, Barça dominate and win at home

A big win at last!

Barcelona won their final home match of 2017 in exciting fashion, dominating Deportivo La Coruña at Camp Nou on their way to a 4-0 victory that could have been a lot more. Barça played well and many players had great performances, and the team will arrive at El Clasico next week with a lot of confidence and an 11-point gap over Real Madrid.

FIRST HALF

For the first time in quite a while, it was fun to watch Barça play. The Blaugrana had a bit of a slow start but picked up the pace and began to blitz the Deportivo defense, with Lionel Messi at the heart of everything good the team did. La Coruña had nothing to offer offensively and limited themselves to a few hopeful long balls and set pieces.

Paulinho and Luis Suárez were also quite active in the attack, and the two got goals thanks to Messi: first, after a delicious chip into the box by Iniesta found Messi alone in front of goal, but Leo decided to give a tap-in to Suárez for the opener. Then, seconds after hitting the crossbar, Messi hit the post but the rebound fell perfectly to Paulinho who easily doubled Barça’s lead.

Barça made it 3-0 just before halftime when a rabona finish from Suárez clearly went over the line, but because this is La Liga the goal was not given. At halftime, a very strong performance from the hosts gave them a two-goal lead that should have been three.

SECOND HALF

Barça made it 3-0 two minutes into the second half with a brilliant team move that started in their own half with some great dribbling and one-touch passing from Messi and Iniesta, then a great pass from Aleix Vidal to Sergi Roberto, and then a wonderful cross from Roberto to Suárez for the third.

The Blaugrana were in complete control and it was just a question of how many goals they wanted to score. Messi certainly wanted to score and he hit the post for a third time in the match, and when Suárez won a penalty to give Leo a golden chance to finally get his goal he wasn’t able to beat goalkeeer Rubén. Barça did get a fourth, however, thanks to another shot that hit the post and fell to Paulinho for another easy tap-in.

Deportivo spent the last few minutes trying to get a consolation goal, but Barça were able to keep the clean sheet and pick up three big points ahead of next weekeend’s Clásico.
