La Liga News: 23 August 2015; Atletico Madrid Struggle for Win, Valencia Open Season with Draw

Atletico Madrid beat Las Palmas thanks to Antoine Griezmann - ESPN FC
Antoine Griezmann was on target with the only goal of the match as Atletico Madrid took all three points from their Primera Division curtain raiser with newly promoted Las Palmas. All eyes were on £25 million signing Jackson Martinez on his competitive debut for the club, but it was the familiar face of Griezmann who quickly took centre-stage at the Vicente Calderon.

Valencia ask for De Vrij | Football Italia
Valencia have reportedly offered €14m for Lazio defender Stefan de Vrij. According to sources in Spain, the proposal was rejected because the Aquile want at least €18m. Valencia are short on centre-backs and believe the Dutchman is the key to solving that issue.

Rayo Vallecano 0-0 Valencia - ESPN FC
Champions League hopefuls Valencia were held to a disappointing draw at Rayo Vallecano in an exciting yet goalless Primera Division opener in Vallecas. Nuno Espirito Santo's side had the better of the first half and came within inches of grabbing an injury-time winner when former Rayo striker Alvaro Negredo's powerful effort was tipped away by the excellent Tono.

The President of La Liga, Javier Tabas, has approved a move by Rayo Vallecano to purchase the proposed NASL expansion team Oklahoma City FC. While nothing has been publically confirmed as of yet, reports from Spain are that Rayo are set to buy the majority shares in the expansion franchise. The move would make Rayo the first La Liga club to have controlling interest in a U.S. based club.

Deportivo La Coruña 0-0 Real Sociedad - ESPN FC
Real Sociedad edged the first half, creating marginally more chances. Big money summer signing Jonathas de Jesus attempted a bicycle kick that went several feet wide of goal, and then the Brazilian was put through one-on-one with goalkeeper German Lux, but the Argentinian came out quickly to prevent the striker chipping the ball over his head.

Espanyol 1-0 Getafe - ESPN FC
Despite losing a number of key players over the summer, including captain and last season's top scorer Sergio Garcia, striker Christian Stuani, winger Lucas Vazquez and Mexico international defender Hector Moreno, Espanyol got off to the ideal start.
